About the Item

Ai Weiwei
 Money (£), 2020 Litho-print on Somerset paper 11.69 x 8.27 in
, 29.7 x 21.0 cm Edition of 840 comes with COA In this work, Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei deconstructs contemporary British society through the prism of £100. Like so much of his most powerful work, it is unapologetically critical of the social, economic and political structures of the capitalist West. Starting by listing the more arbitrary commodities available to a person with £100 - cans of baked beans, taxi journeys and marijuana - Ai digresses into examining the value of £100 as a percentage of vast sums being made and spent by powerful individuals and institutions. In doing so, he highlights the divide and disparity found in society today and implicitly demands action be taken. Ai Weiwei, born in Beijing, China, in 1957, is a globally renowned contemporary artist and activist whose work spans various mediums, including sculpture, installations, photography, and social media. Emerging from a background rooted in conceptual and avant-garde art, Ai Weiwei gained international prominence for his provocative and critical engagement with Chinese culture, politics, and society. His art often challenges authority and speaks out against human rights abuses. Notable works include the "Bird's Nest" stadium for the Beijing Olympics and the "Sunflower Seeds" installation at Tate Modern in London. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Ai Weiwei is a vocal advocate for free expression and individual rights. His activism has led to clashes with Chinese authorities, including periods of detention and restrictions on his movements. Despite these challenges, Ai Weiwei continues to inspire and provoke with his thought-provoking art and unwavering commitment to the principles of human dignity and freedom.
