The four-color separations were produced by Bussiere AG; composition by Typelec. A luxury edition on velin dArches was printed in an edition of CL examples, numbered and signed by the artist. Additional notes (excerpted from Christies, New York): The lifespan of Derriere le Miroir was thirty-five years, beginning in 1946 under Aime Maeght, whose gallery opened a year earlier. Conceived as a collaboration between artists and poets, the series featured original lithographs and prints by modern masters such as Braque, Matisse, Chagall, Leger, Bonnard, Chillida, and Calder. Although the early issues saw limited commercial success, Derriere le Miroir soon established a permanent format combining fine color printing and critical text, becoming a defining document of postwar European art. Galerie Maeght and Calder maintained a long and fruitful partnership, producing many of the artist’s most celebrated graphic works. About the artist: Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was a pioneering American sculptor whose innovations in kinetic and abstract art transformed twentieth-century modernism. Trained as a mechanical engineer before studying at the Art Students League in New York, Calder fused technical precision with artistic experimentation to invent the mobile—a groundbreaking form of suspended sculpture defined by balance, motion, and color. Coined by Marcel Duchamp, the term “mobile” captured Calder’s vision of sculpture as a dynamic, ever-changing composition animated by air and light. Alongside his mobiles, Calder created monumental stabiles—stationary metal sculptures that extend his exploration of form and movement into architectural and public spaces. His works are held in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the National Gallery of Art, and remain central to the study of kinetic and Constructivist abstraction. The highest auction price for a Calder artwork is USD 25,925,000, achieved by Poisson volant (Flying Fish) (1957) at Christie’s New York in 2014.
