About the Item

André Lambert (1884-1967), Untitled (Adoration of the Magi, Nativity) color etching, 1910, edition 100. Signed and numbered '7-100' in pencil; signed and dated in the plate, upper left. A fine impression, with fresh colors, on buff wove paper, with margins (1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches). Hinge stains on the top sheet edge, well away from the image, otherwise in excellent condition. Image size 3 13/16 x 5 inches; sheet size 6 9/16 x 8 5/8 inches. Matted to museum standards, unframed. ABOUT THE ARTIST André Lambert (1884-1967) was born in Germany into a family of architects. He studied art first in Munich and later in Paris, inspired by the work of Aubrey Beardsley, who he lauded as one of the greatest illustrators of the 20th century. His devotion to ancient Greek and Roman culture and art gave birth to his unique, particularly intimate style. After several years in Germany during which he collaborated on the review ‘Simplicissimus’, he moved to Paris. In 1919, he founded the review ‘Janus’, with Georges Aubault, which was written entirely in Latin. His friend Emile Bernard participated in the illustrations. Having grown weary of the atmosphere in Montmartre, after a visit to Spain, he moved there in 1920. The country became his refuge and his source of inspiration. The bibliophile Latinist expressed his creativity illustrating the Roman classics of Ovid and Petronius. Lambert devoted himself to mastering engraving and etching—the perfect mediums for producing his meticulous renderings of antique legend and mythology in multiples. His expertise as a printmaker became celebrated by other well known modernist artists of the period, such as Gerda Wegener and Edouard Chimot. His acclaimed watercolor series ‘Sept Peches Capitaux’ (The Seven Deadly Sins), was completed in 1918 in the spirit of Barbier, Lepape, and Brunelleschi, the major art deco artist-illustrators of the first half of the 20th century.
