Angel Botello’s signature flat headed, Cubist portraits are instantly recognizable. In this case, a young girl sits in her chair hugging her one eyed or winking doll. The girl’s hands and feet have four fingers and toes respectively, whilst her face is halved by two tonal values, more of Botello’s stylistic touches. This work was produced circa 1967. A limited edition, 1 out of 60. Signed in pencil lower right.
Ángel Botello was a Spanish painter known for his use of vibrant colors and depictions of island life and people in Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. His work is often compared to that of Gauguin, both for his focus on Caribbean women and for his use of bold lines and flat colors.

Angel Botello
Ángel Botello (June 20, 1913 - November 11, 1986) was a Spanish-Puerto Rican painter, sculptor, and graphic artist. He was dubbed "The Caribbean Gauguin" for his bold colors and depictions of island life. Botello is considered one of the greatest Latin American post-modern artists, and recognition and demand for his artwork continue to grow today, fetching unprecedented auction prices. Ángel Botello was never attached to any particular artistic school or movement and was a protean artist: he developed his artistic style. Botello was a versatile and many-sided artist who worked in all creative media at his reach: oil paintings, drawing, printmaking, bronze sculptures, wood carving, photography, and mosaics.

Hiroshige Utagawa grew up in a samurai family in Edo where both him and his father were in the fire service before being orphaned. Hiroshige’s first formal art teacher was Rinsai. Though Hiroshige tried to join Toyokuni Utagawa's studio, he was turned away. In 1811, young Hiroshige entered an apprenticeship with the celebrated Toyohiro Utagawa. After only a year, he was bestowed with the artist name Hiroshige. He gave up his role in the fire department to focus entirely on painting and print design. He studied painting, intrigued by the Shijo school. Hiroshige’s artistic genius wasn’t recognized until 1832 when he became a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition, creating 8000 prints in saturated color.
His series of woodblock prints of the Tokaido road connecting Edo to Kyoto was his breakthrough series known as The 53 Stations of the Tokaido (1832-1833). His most renowned series was known as 100 Famous Views of Edo...
