About the Item

LOVE IS IN THE AIR, Signed, Authenticated Contemporary British Screenprint 34/500 Banksy (British, 1974/55 - ) LOVE IS IN THE AIR 19 3/4 x 27 1/2 inches Screenprint on heavy paper Signed and number 34/500 lower right Authentication letter provided by Pest Control The work is offered by a NYC dealer. It is consigned by a Los Angeles collector. The print and Pest Control letter are in LA. Serious inquiries invited. Here is the story of 34/500 In 2003 the consigner was working on a film in London called "Tomb Raider." During the time there a dear friend and colleague of the consignor were fascinated by a new, young, unknown graffiti artist who was creating incredible pieces of street art that were unique, thought provoking and just crazy. A friend of the consignor's friend, who was the Artist’s right hand man, would receive a phone call from the Artist when he was preparing to create a new piece somewhere in London. He would rush to the site and photograph the stencil whether it be small, in a Zoo or an installation on the side of a building, crossing the street and even over a car or two. It was awe inspiring. The consignor and his friend were chatting with the photographer about how great and fresh the artist was, so they were invited to the artist's studio where we were given access to all of the prints, right off the table. The friend and the consignor gladly put their money down and were able to choose pieces that meant something to them. They each acquired five amazing lithographs. Turns out, 20 plus years later, the artist was BANKSY. The rest is history. BIO Banksy (British, born c. 1974/1975) is one of the most well-known, if anonymous, street artists working today. Banksy, the pseudonym adopted by the artist, guards his privacy and the details of his life remain largely unknown to the public. He initially garnered fame for his grafitti, which combines spray paint and stenciling techniques with commercial, political, and contemporary imagery, infused with ironic social commentary and humor. His work first began appearing on walls in and around Bristol and London’s Shoreditch district during the mid-1990s, and he has since gone on to place images on the sides of corporate buildings, billboards, and the Israeli West Bank wall. The unveiling of a new Banksy works often incorporates pranks or performance. For example, he secretly added his own pieces in museums like the Tate Modern in London or the Paris Louvre, smuggling them in under a coat and discreetly affixing them to a wall. He has also opened gallery shows to the public with specially-bred rats running around the space, and once inserted an inflatable doll dressed as a Guantanamo Bay prisoner into the Disneyland theme park in California. In 2015, Banksy created a large-scale installation titled Dismaland Bemusement Park, and immersive and fully functional amusement park that featured political commentary on the distribution of wealth, sexism, and the UK government. The park operated from August to September of 2015, was funded by Banksy himself. In addition to his regular graffiti practice, Banksy creates works for several charities, and consistently opens exhibitions to wide audiences and critical acclaim. He lives and works in England.

New Masses Magazine May 1926, Vol 1, No 1. VG Condition. Workers Communist Party New Masses Magazine. May 1926, Inaugural: Vol 1, No 1. Published by the New Masses Inc., 39 West 8th St., New York City. New Masses (1926-1948) was an American Marxist magazine launched in New York City. It was closely associated with the Communist Party USA. With the coming of the Great Depression in 1929 America became more receptive to ideas from the political Left and New Masses became highly influential in intellectual circles. The magazine has been called the principal organ of the American cultural left from 1926 onwards. It featured the work of an array of independent writers and artists. In the exhibition several issues of "New Masses" are exhibited, but not Vol 1. No. 1. We offer that. Lithograph by Hugo Gellert on the cover and multiple illustrations in magazine. • Barbra Stresiand "Belle of 14th Street" 1973 CBS TV Special 20th Century Litho
    By Albert Al Hirschfeld
    Located in New York, NY
Barbra Stresiand "Belle of 14th Street" 1973 CBS TV Special 20th Century Litho Signed and numbered 10/150 in pencil, lower margin. Etching, 13.5” x 9.75”. Framed 21.25” x 17.25”. Pulled in 1975. Belle of 14th Street After two successful television shows on CBS, Barbra's manager, Marty Erlichman told the press, “We don't intend to go to the well once too often. The next special will have other performers. However, Barbra will never become just another hostess for just another musical variety show. Whatever we decide to do in the future shows, she will dominate in a unique fashion.” Barbra’s third television special for CBS and her sponsor, Monsanto, was titled The Belle of 14th Street . In February 1966, shortly after finishing up Color Me Barbra , Streisand and husband Elliott Gould took a second honeymoon in Paris. The trip was financed by her television corporate sponsor, Chemstrand. Barbra told the press, “I’m here to purchase the wardrobe for my next TV special. Cost is no object because my sponsor is picking up the tab.” At that point the theme of her third TV show would be fashion, and Paris offered many couture choices. Barbra was seen at a Dior fashion show wearing not the designer’s clothes, but a jaguar suit and hat she had designed herself. In all, it is said Barbra chose nine Dior outfits at a cost of $150,000. However, Barbra Streisand's third television special for CBS was postponed. In March 1966, Barbra flew to London to appear at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Funny Girl . Shortly after beginning her run in London, Barbra announced her pregnancy. Not only did that cause her concert tour to be abbreviated, but Barbra’s television special was postponed as well. Barbra told the BBC in July 1966: “I also can’t do my third television show, which I was supposed to do here [London].” Returning to the States, Barbra performed four concert dates, and then retired to enjoy the rest of her pregnancy and give birth to her son, Jason, in December 1966. CBS and Chemstrand wanted a new special by the end of 1967, therefore production on the show picked up momentum in March 1967. (Barbra was due in Hollywood in May to begin shooting the Funny Girl film.) The format and theme of the television show had changed, too. Instead of centering on fashion, Barbra’s next special would be situated in a 1900’s Vaudeville theater. “We were all determined that the show not be just a variety format,” director Joe Layton said. “We wanted something different. So we hit upon the idea of restaging a vaudeville performance. All the acts, songs, skits and specialties had to be derivative of the period between 1895-1912.” Barbra’s creative collaborators did meticulous research on Vaudeville — “We even called George Burns in Hollywood and Jack Pearl,” said Barbra’s manager, Marty Erlichman. Entitled The Belle of 14th Street , the new special would allow Barbra to play several different characters but not have to shoulder the burden of carrying another one-woman show—this time Streisand would be accompanied by guest stars: Broadway actor Jason Robards; Vaudeville veteran John Bubbles; and Lee Allen...
