About the Item

"Crucifixion" is an etching and aquatint, printed in brown ink by Conrad M. Metz after a painting by Daniele da Volterra. It was published in London in 1789 in 'Imitations Of Ancient And Modern Drawings Engraved And Published By C. M. Metz', also know as ' Imitations of ancient and Modern Drawings, from the Restoration of the Arts in Italy to the Present Time. Together with a Chronological Account of the Artists, and Strictures on their Works, in English and French. By C. M. Metz'. The sheet measures 17" high and 11.75" wide. It is in very good condition. Daniele Ricciarelli (c. 1509-1566), also known as Daniele da Volterra, was an Italian Mannerist painter and sculptor during the Renaissance period, and an associate of Michelangelo. He was born in Volterra, Italy, and began his artistic training under the guidance of the painter Baldassare Peruzzi in Rome. Ricciarelli became known for his skill in painting frescoes and was commissioned to create works in various churches and palaces throughout Italy. One of his most famous works is the fresco cycle in the Cappella Orsini in the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome. In addition to his work as a painter, Ricciarelli was also a talented sculptor. He created several sculptures for the tomb of Pope Julius II in the San Pietro in Vincoli church in Rome, including the famous statue of Moses with horns on his head, which caused controversy at the time. Later in his career, Ricciarelli became known for his skill in creating erotic art, which was a departure from his earlier religious works. After Michelangelo's death, Daniele was commissioned by Pope Paul III to paint over the nude figures in Michelangelo's "Last Judgment" fresco in the Sistine Chapel with loincloths, earning him the nickname "Il Braghettone" (the breeches maker). Despite this controversial work, Ricciarelli continued to receive commissions and was highly regarded in his lifetime. He died in Rome in 1566 at the age of 57. Conrad Martin Metz (1749-1827) was a German artist and publisher. He studied in London at the Royal Academy Schools as well as with the engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. Metz engraved many religious subjects after the old masters in publications such as Imitations of Drawings by Parmegiano. In 1801 he went to Rome, where he undertook his most ambitious project, which was a huge engraving combining fifteen plates from Michelangelo’s Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. This print is in the collection of the Royal Academy in London and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Gift of the Magi: An 18th C. Religious Engraving by Vale, After Calmarat
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a very rare early 18th century old master religious themed engraving entitled "Les Mages...Trouverent l'Enfant avec Marie sa Mere, et se prosternant entere ils l'adorent Puis ouvrant leurs tresors ils tuy offrirent pour present de lor de l'encens et de la myrrhe" by S. Vale after Calmaret, published in Paris by Pierre Drevet (1663-1738). The scene depicts the Magi bowing before Jesus, who is held by his mother Mary, and bringing him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to demonstrate their adoration and respect. Winged cherubs fly overhead and a ray of light is focused on the spiritual couple. A cattle stall and buildings are in the background and a crown and scepter are dropped in the foreground, symbolically demonstrating that these nobles place Jesus above their titles and rank. Little is known about the artist Calmarat or the engraver S...

Parmigiani Amica: An 18th Century Engraving and Etching by Strange After Mazzola
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an 18th century engraving and etching entitled "Parmigiani Amica" by Robert Strange after a painting by Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino, who lived during the Renaissance period. It was published in London in 1774. As the inscription states, the painting was in the collection of the King of Naples at the time the engraving was made. The engraving depicts a half-length portrait of a young woman, known as Parmigiani's Amica (meaning "female friend" in Italian). She is depicted wearing a simple but elegant dress with a low-cut neckline, which reveals her delicate features and graceful neck. Her hair is arranged in a simple yet stylish manner. She is turning to the right to look lovingly at her infant, which she is holding with her right arm. She is touching the baby's mouth with her left hand. The background of the engraving is plain and unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the subject of the portrait. The result is a beautiful and timeless image that captures the essence of Renaissance portraiture. The engraving is printed on watermarked paper. The sheet measures 16.25" high and 12' wide. The sheet is adhered to paper in its upper corners and it has been removed from the paper in its lower corners. There is some mild discoloration and some wrinkling in the margins, including the lower inscription area, and a small dark spot in the upper margin, which may represent a drop of ink occuring at the time of printing. These issues do not involve the image, which is in very good condition. The print is held by several museums and institutions, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The British Museum in London, The Royal Museums of the UK, The British National Trust...

This etching is after Albrecht Dürer’s 1511 engraving "The Crucifixion (Christ on the Cross)", ("Dürer-Katalog" - Meder No. 13, page 73). Printed in black from an iron plate. The image depicts Christ on the cross at center, the Virgin at left, two Maries behind her, St. John standing at right, a Roman solider behind him. It is after the eleventh plate of Dürer's sixteen plates from his 1507-1513 "The Engraved Passion" series, ("Dürer-Katalog" - Meder No. 3-18, page 70-74). "The print was originally designed without the number engraved in the lower margin (First state: Lambrecht Hopfer, c. 1530). The Hopfers' descendant David Funck (Nuremberg, 1642–1705) acquired over two hundred of their original iron plates, engraved numbers into them, and re-printed them around 1686-1700. The "182" indicates that "The Crucifixion" was the 182nd print in Funck’s series (Second state: David Funck, c. 1686-1700). About a century later, 92 of these plates were acquired by Carl Wilhelm Silberberg in Frankfurt and printed for the third and final time in the book "Opera Hopferiana", of which "The Crucifixion" was the 90th print (Third state: Carl Wilhelm Silberberg for "Opera Hopferiana", 1802)". - Elizabeth Upper, Cambridge University Library, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK Biography: Lambrecht (Lambert) Hopfer (Active c. 1525-1550) was a German Old Masters printmaker. He was the brother of Hieronymus Hopfer (Active c. 1520-1530) and son of Daniel Hopfer...
