About the Item
This is a classic New-Deal image: claustrophobic sweatshop with a row of hunched tailors. The windows and lamps offer light at least. But there is a major difference between this and most NYC lithographs of the period -- the drawing style is remarkable. It combines clear, precise detail, as in the carefully delineated hanging lamps, with the use of liquid tusche -- the liquid form of ink used to draw and/or paint onto a lithographic stone or plate.
Ethel Katz (1883-1974) is so skilled that she can even allow it to pool or flood into blank areas because she has so much control.
Of course, it may well have been made and/or printed at the NYC Art Students League where she was also a teacher. (One of not that many women of course.)
Fortunately she both signed and dated it in pencil. 1937 -- perfect!
