About the Item

Religiosi is a wonderful hand-colored etching on paper, representes a Capuchin friar, a Dominican friar and an Agostian with their typical cassocks, as the pencil inscription on the lower margin at the center points. This original print, etched by Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1766-1839), after the drawings by Filippo Ferrari (1814-1897), is taken from a print suite "Costumi di Roma Incisi da Giò. Batt. Cipriani co' disegni del Sign. Filippo Ferrari", published in Rome in 1822. The print, colored with the gouache technique and with bright colors, has a documentarist importance. The original sheet is glued on a ivory-colored passepartout, cm 35.3 x 49.8, with two piece of tape The marginal little holes on the left margin reveal that this plate was binded with other sheets in a volume. In very good conditions, with some minor signs of the time as the usual yellowing of the paper at the egdes and some minor stains. Filippo Ferrari (Rome 1814 - 1897) After legal studies, Filippo Ferrari then began his artistic career as an engraver and sculptor under the guidance of a paternal uncle. Author of a collection of civil and ecclesiastical costumes of the Papal State, he was the father of the famous Ettore Ferrari, also a painter and sculptor, an active politician of the Democratic Left.
