About the Item

Gargantua is an original modern rare book by François Rabelais illustrated for the first time by Gustave Doré (Strasbourg, 1832 – 23 January 1883) in 1854. Published by J. Bry Ainé, Paris, 1854. Format: 4°. The book includes 339 pages with several illustrations and 15 full page woodcuts by Doré. Mint conditions. Gustave Doré in 1868. Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (Strasbourg, 1832 – 23 January 1883) was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor who worked primarily with wood-engraving. In 1853 Doré was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This commission was followed by additional work for British publishers, including a new illustrated Bible. In 1856 he produced 12 folio-size illustrations of The Legend of The Wandering Jew, which propagated longstanding antisemitic views of the time, for a short poem which Pierre-Jean de Béranger had derived from a novel of Eugène Sue of 1845. In the 1860s he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, became so famous that they influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical "look" of the two characters. Doré also illustrated an oversized edition of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", an endeavor that earned him 30,000 francs from publisher Harper & Brothers in 1883. Doré's later work included illustrations for new editions of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Milton's Paradise Lost, Tennyson's Idylls of the King, The Works of Thomas Hood, and The Divine Comedy. Doré's work also appeared in the weekly newspaper The Illustrated London News. François Rabelais (born c. 1494, Poitou, France— 1553, Paris). He was a French writer and priest who for his contemporaries was an eminent physician and humanist and for posterity is the author of the comic masterpiece Gargantua and Pantagruel. The four novels composing this work are outstanding for their rich use of Renaissance French and for their comedy, which ranges from gross burlesque to profound satire. They exploit popular legends, farces, and romances, as well as classical and Italian material, but were written primarily for a court public and a learned one. The adjective Rabelaisian applied to scatological humour is misleading; Rabelais used scatology aesthetically, not gratuitously, for comic condemnation. His creative exuberance, colourful and wide-ranging vocabulary, and literary variety continue to ensure his popularity.

Assemblée Nationale Comique - Vintage Rare Book Illustrated by CHAM - 1850
By Charles Amedee de Noe (CHAM)
Located in Roma, IT
Assemblée Nationale Comique is an original modern rare book illustrated by CHAM and written by Auguste Lireux (Rouen, 1814 - 1870, Bougival) in 1850. Published by Michel Lévy Frères –Paris. Original First Edition. Format: large 8°. The book includes 625 pages and 20 fully illustrated page lithographs. Mint conditions. Auguste Lireux (Rouen, 1814 - 1870, Bougival). Lireux began, out of college, by founding, in his hometown, a small newspaper, the Indiscret , whose sarcastic and biting tone made him many enemies and which earned him seven or eight duels, where he has almost always been injured. There he recounted the marital misadventures of his compatriots, a process which provided him with a great deal of copy, but which he had to put an end to when a chair-mender outraged in his reputation had not inflicted on him a correction which could have had very serious consequences if the painter Garneray had not come to his aid. Discouraged, in 1841 he went to Paris, where he founded La Patrie which was then regarded as an opposition newspaper. He entered several other newspapers, including the Revue et gazette des théâtres , which then had among its editors Édouard Thierry , the administrator of the Théâtre-Français, the Courrier français (1846), the Revue comique (1848), the Messenger from theaters...
