Peter Doig
Subban and Nolan

2017

About the Item

Peter Doig (b. 1959) is widely considered to be one of the most successful contemporary figurative painters. Blending diverse references with personal experiences, his paintings explore memory, place, leisure and sport. Both ambiguous and specific in mood, Subban and Nolan reflects this mix of the personal and universal, encapsulating the ideas that shape Doig's ongoing practice. This work is a key example of Doig's dreamlike approach to image-making. Three enigmatic players, partially obscured, are captured mid-action, during a hockey game. It's a scene any Canadian or hockey fan would know, evoking a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. The figures are realized amongst light blotches and rings, emphasizing the impressionistic quality of the image, and emulating melted ice and rink markings. While Doig was born in Scotland, he spent his childhood and adolescence in Canada. During these formative years, he developed a love for winter sports, saying "Hockey is a priority in my life". He is a devoted fan of the Montreal Canadians -- whose logo is pictured buy abstracted in this etching. Doig is one of the few top-tier contemporary artists to regularly depict sport in his oeuvre. He frequently reduces elements of machismo or competition, instead prioritizing the atmospheric environments and their distinctive temperatures where they occur. For the artist national identity is often connected to sport and leisure. Doig has depicted skiers, hikers and cricket players at different points during his career. In 2007, Doig became a household name when his painting “White Canoe” sold for $11.3 million at auction, setting the record at the time for the highest auction price by a living artist. By the age of 50, he had major retrospectives at the Tate Britain, the Paris Museum of Modern Art, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Adam and Eve
By Salvador Dalí
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) is Surrealism's most accomplished and iconic practitioner. His work is eccentric, elaborate, and mysterious, with an avant-garde style that explores the depths of consciousness and dream-like states. Prolific and endlessly inventive, Dali worked in almost every possible artistic medium; film, sculpture, photography, fashion and of course painting. Some of his earliest etchings date to the 1930's, as he worked in the graphic arts at the beginning of his career. "Adam & Eve" comes from a series called "Our Historical Heritage." The portfolio depicts eleven events and historical figures from the Hebrew scriptures (the Torah or Old Testament), including Noah's Ark, Joseph, Moses, and more. This portfolio emphasizes Dali's influence by religious themes, and is created with his signature mastery and style. This etching depicts the pivotal moment in the biblical story, when temptation strikes Adam and Eve, as they sit in the Garden of Eden and are lured to the lustrous forbidden fruit hanging from the tree of knowledge. Eve's hand wraps around the apple while Adam's reaches for it, as the serpent watches...
