About the Item

Customary Hats: Artists: Phlegm Year: 2020 Class: Art Print Released: 12/09/20 Run: 275 Technique: Etching Paper: Fabriano Rosaspina 280gsm Size: 7.874 X 12.992 Markings: Signed & Numbered Copper plate engraving About: Phlegm is a world-known cartoonist and illustrator from Wales. He is also well known for his self-published comics and highly creative street art. Phlegm’s work is distinctively detailed composed of odd figures and a narrative structure. His work inspires greatness and is even often inspired by graffiti where Phlegm transforms run down urban spaces and factories. The name Phlegm came from one of the four bodily humours in ancient Greek medicine: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Phlegm was believed to be responsible for an apathetic and unemotional temperament. Phlegm Street Art The majority of Phlegm’s artwork is strictly illustration-based. He leaves his street artwork and murals for his cartoon-based art. In fact, that majority of his large characters originate from his comics and they are often spray painted onto very large walls. Phlegm prefers to paint his comic work with black Indian ink and a dip pen. He uses color only when he is screen-printing or painting large murals and other objects. Since Phlegm emerged, he has gained worldwide recognition and is one of the most admired street artists across the world. His street art is very exciting and highly recognizable. His work has also appeared in a variety of objects such as airplanes, boats, buildings, vehicles and many street art festivals. Phlegm Graffiti Phlegm states that he has a strange relation to graffiti. His style has grown strictly and entirely from his self-published comics, as opposed to letter styles. His comic comes out of every four months or so and he works endlessly on them. Over the last few years he has put a strong effort into working on the street art end. He truly enjoys working the space provided on large walls, urban spaces, old factories, and other buildings. He believes that a painting in the street becomes a part of the cities architecture and it is influenced by what’s around it as opposed to being an awkward canvass in an art gallery. Phlegm’s first solo show was named ‘The Bestiary’ and took place at the Howard Griffin Gallery on Shoreditch High Street, London from 1 February to 25 March 2014. Since then, Phlegm has painted in numerous countries like Canada, USA, Iceland, Tunisia, Belgium, New Zealand… Phlegm was born in North Wales and he currently resides in Sheffield, UK – England’s Steel City. Although you can find his work across the world, most of it is found in the United Kingdom.

Hebru Brantley - 3 The Hard Way - Urban Graffiti Street Art
By Hebru Brantley
Located in Asheville, NC
“3 THE HARD WAY portrays the concept of standing together to fight a system of racism and violence against the Black community — because we are stronger together,” explained Brantley. “I was thinking about building a community, building that totem, stacking one on top of another to reach somewhere closer to where we need to be. I’ve been exploring the language of totems and like the idea that you can combine different ideologies and tie them together in one narrative. Through 3 THE HARD WAY what I’m creating is one very concise theme, of brotherhood and building. Ultimately, the works highlight themes of race and power, but also hope.” Artists: Brantley, Hebru Manufacturer: Avant Arte...

Fred Deux - Grey Surrealism V - Signed Original Etching
By Fred Deux
Located in Collonge Bellerive, Geneve, CH
Fred Deux - Grey V - Signed Original Etching Signed and Numbered Edition of 100 Dimensions: 24 x 14 cm Fred Deux Fred Deux, illustrator, oral poet, writer, and, under the pseudonym Jean Douassot, author of a cult book, La Gana, was a singular artist who cannot be categorised in terms of art fashions and trends. This autodidact, born in the basement of a large house in Boulogne-Billancourt to a working-class family, constantly had to overcome, as he would say. “He had to overcome”: overcome the basement walls to access the life which called him and burnt inside him. Overcome the barriers between the arts, moving from drawing to the written word, and from the page to the tape recorder, in the face of which he recounted stories to himself in a sort of endless reverie, constantly exploring the unknown in him. Overcoming and being overcome: gradually immersing himself in drawing, so that it was life itself which overcame him and surrendered to him. Timeline 1924 Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris. The Deux family lived in the basement of a building close to the Seine that was often flooded. These living conditions formed the biographical core around in which the artist would develop his work as a future writer and artist. 1942 Deux worked in a factory as an electrician and night guard. 1943 Deux becomes part of the FTP group to resist against the factory. And then joined the Maquis du Doubs. 1945 At the liberation, Deux joined the Moroccan Goumier, and took part of the campaigns of Vosges, Alsace and Germany. 1947 Returned to France. Installation in Marseille. Worked in an important library that belonged to the family of his wife. 1948 Discovered Breton, Bataille, Cendrars, Peret, Sade... and founded the sub-group of Surrealists in Marseille and formed a link with the literary magazine of Marseille, Cahiers du Sud Encounters the works of Paul Klee. He begins creating his first stains with paint for bicycle and impressions (fabric and ink). At the same time, he begins to take notes for what would become "Les Rats", first version of "La Gana". 1951 Meets Cecile Reims...
