Richard Haizmann (1895–1963) was a German painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his expressionist and abstract works. Born in Villingen, Baden, he served in World War I and was held as a prisoner of war in France, where he met art collector Herbert von Garvens. After the war, Haizmann briefly pursued a commercial career before establishing the Graphisches Kabinett art gallery in Hamburg in 1922. Encouraged by museum director Max Sauerlandt and artist Karl Ballmer, he began creating his own art, focusing on sculpture, ceramics, and woodcuts. His early works often depicted animals such as cats, birds, and elephants, characterized by simplified, stylized forms.
In 1934, following the rise of the Nazi regime and the death of his mentor Sauerlandt, Haizmann relocated to Niebüll in northern Germany. There, he continued his artistic endeavors despite being labeled a "degenerate" artist by the Nazis. Many of his works were removed from museums and destroyed. Notably, his bronze fountain sculpture "Wasserspeier" was dismantled and melted down. Despite these challenges, Haizmann persisted in his art, holding a successful exhibition of landscape watercolors in Dagebüll.
After World War II, Haizmann returned to abstract forms and explored new techniques, including monotypes and large-scale woodcuts. His post-war works often delved into spiritual and mythological themes, producing series such as "Menschen und Götter" and "Erzengel." Today, his legacy is preserved at the Richard Haizmann Museum in Niebüll, which showcases his works alongside exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
