Sheet size 17" x 14", image size 13" x 10" 2022 Signed, Editioned, dated and titled in pencil Provenance: From the artist's studio Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same. The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed from the older generations to the younger women. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels. In Sonal's own words, 'This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work. Everyone says that ever since the Vedi came to our house, the pigeon has laid 16 to 17 eggs at our place till now. We all call the vedi as big sister, she is the big sister of all these pigeons, whenever new eggs are seen, we go many times to see, everything is fine. We have got Tripal installed so that everything is fine, some people say that it is good for pigeons to come in the house, some people say that pigeons do not leave quickly and do a lot of filth. But we think they would feel safe here, so they come again and again to lay eggs. All of us worship according to our faith. When a new child is born in the house, both the mother and the child are kept together and worshiped, keeping in mind the different days of each state. It is said that this worship was done for 11 days in our place, it is believed that both mother and child become pure and women can again go to the temple, worship, apply vermilion on the forehead, take a bath, Means it becomes completely pure, in this Ghori ji and Ganesh ji were made from cow dung and are worshiped with vermilion. In this, looking at the Sun God, he is also worshipped. Mahavar is also applied to the feet, I think we all should not forget our civilization because this is our heritage. My mother had a habit of keeping things in order, she used to keep the smallest things very carefully. After mother's departure, my sister kept everything very carefully. My mother loved small children very much. I had bought a very cute sweater and when my sister got it, she gave it to me. I think the day he came to my house, the beginning of Vedu's coming was because Vedu's coming is a miracle for us and it was not going to happen without mother's blessings, maybe that's why my sister gave him to me, maybe mom Must have taken it for me only. When there are children, they are put on eyes to protect them from the evil eye, and according to different customs in every state, there are different eyes, it is said that when children are small, they get lost in their old life and according to that We cry, laugh, sometimes get scared, to remove the same fear, we wear eyes, to avoid the evil eye, a silver knife is worn, Sun God, Moon, Alas {for evil eye} all these are silver. and is worn in black thread around the neck of the Pirs. Everyone likes to stay at home and rest, when heard that everything is going to be closed and such a disease has come, the name of which is feared even today, it was a very bad time. In the beginning, everyone spent that time happily at home, cooked good food, ate a lot, watched television together and the most famous serial "Ramayana", which is fun to watch together, refreshes the old memories.'

K. Laxma Goud - Untitled - Paper Size : 29.7 x 22.2 inches Print Size : 18.5 x 12.8 inches Intaglio on Paper ; 2014 ALL IN DOOR DELIVERED ( Unframed & Delivered ) Style : Goud displays versatility over a range of mediums, from printmaking, drawing, watercolour, gouache and pastels to glass painting and sculpture in bronze and terracotta. Over the many years of his artistic career, he is known to have moved from one medium to another with élan. Fellow artist T. Vaikuntam, in one of his interviews, reminisces that it was Laxma Goud who introduced him to the art of sketching and made him aware of the possibilities of this medium. When one looks at Goud’s work, rustic, raw, and potent might be the first words that come to mind. His portraits of men and women represent the dynamic Indian ethos rather than particular individual identities. A recurrent theme with the artist is that of the erotic, treated as an active and powerful aspect of male and female sexuality and existence. Goud’s work is dramatic; his protagonists are raw and vivacious in their appeal, imbibed with energy that reverberates through his strokes and textures. Most of Goud’s art is centered on the rural, recreating landscapes from his childhood as if they were frozen in time. In the artist’s later work, his figures turn softer, more introspective than brash in their outlook. About the Artist and his work : Born : 1940 in Nizampur, Andhra Pradesh...
