About the Item
Steinlen, Alexandre Theophile. Cover for Les Chansons de Montmartre, 1899. Lithograph [2nd state of 3], before the borders were cut.
Ref: Crauzat 218.
Steinlen was born in Switzerland, where he studied art at Lausanne In 1882 he arrived in Paris where he worked as an illustrator for the journals Mirliton, Assiette au Beurre, Chat Noir, and Gil Blas, for which he produced over four hundred lithographs, Steinlen was famous for his posters of cabaret and music hall performers. Perhaps the most noteworthy of these is one done for the French singer Yvette Guilbert's cabaret Les. Guilbert preferred Steinlen's posters to another famous version, done by Toulouse-Lautrec. The two artists are often compared . His later work for the journals, like that of Lautrec, became increasingly satirical and critical of society. Steinlen, too, often drew genre scenes of the working class, capturing day-to-day life in Paris with a simple, endearing style. He was very found of animals, especially cats, and often included them in his posters. Steinlen's cats proved so popular, in fact, that they became a trademark of his work.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen
Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was born in Lausanne in 1859. He was naturalized French in 1901. He was a painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist and sculptor. Before settling in Paris, he made a detour to Mulhouse where one of his uncles placed him in the studio of one of the best lithographers of the time. He settled definitively in Montmartre in 1881. Willette introduced him to his companions of the Cabaret du Chat-Noir animated by Rodolphe Salis. He met Toulouse-Lautrec, Forain, Léandre, Debussy, Eric Satie, Verlaine, Alphonse Allais and Aristide Bruant. He took part in the performances of the famous cabaret's shadow theater with animal stories and, most often, sequences featuring cats, for which he has a particular affection. The felines will appear throughout his activity as "parentheses" in a tormented work. There is, in this torment, the expression of no personal problem but a painful compassion for the lives of the exploited and marginal beings. He painted and drew idylls, balls and bastrings, workers, kids and gosselin, the poor, the little workers, girls and marlous. He sometimes made posters. In the most successful of them (« Le lait pur de la Vingeanne » et le « Fer Bravais ») he imposed, relevant or not, the presence of cats.
In 1901, Steinlen worked for L'Assiette au beurre , the most virulent satirical newspaper ever published and takes readily to target the institutions of the 3rd Republic.
His works are found in numerous Public Collections, such as Petit Palais in Geneva, Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Harper's July, The German Struggle for Liberty original art nouveau poster
By Edward Penfield
Located in Spokane, WA
Original Harper's July vintage poster; The German Struggle for Liberty. Original turn of the century lithograph by Edward Penfield. Size: 14 1/8" x 21 18"
Penfield created this poster to publicize Bigelow’s lengthy history of the Germanic people, serialized in the Monthly as “the first popular interpretation ever given to the rehabilitation of Germany through the uprising of the German people against the Napoleanic invasion.” July’s number began the series, which was published by Harper and Brothers as a two-volume set in 1896.
Harper's June 1895
HARPER’S The German Struggle for Liberty JULY
[Poster for Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, Jul 1895]. German soldier at the guardhouse. Four-color lithograph: grey, blue, yellow, and red. New York: Harper & Brothers, published Jun 1895.
The magazine Harper's, issue of July, confronts the problems of The German Struggle for Liberty. Shown a German soldier in a helmet and armed with a rifle stands tall, and yet an uneasiness appears on his face. At a closer look, one will notice that not only does the soldier grasp his rifle in support, but in despair.
This Harper's July is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed. An restored fold mark across the middle of the image keeps this image from being rated higher (for an original 1895 poster).
