About the Item
The Yale Football Team and Groups of Spectators at the Championship Game between Yale and Harvard which shows the eleven member Yale football team seated and wearing their blue and white uniforms with a blue Y on their jerseys. Each team members name is displayed in correspondence to their seat. The surrounding spectators are divided by their team affiliation. Published by Harper’s Weekly as a supplement in the December 10th 1887 issue. An original double page hand colored wood engraving created from a photograph taken specifically for the Weekly and in very good condition with the original publication center fold and one repair in the top margin.
The first Harvard-Yale game was played in 1875 before a crowd of 2000. The next year, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Princeton and Pennsylvania formed the Intercollegiate Football Association. The Association agreed to use the Harvard rules and agreed that the two strongest teams would meet each year on Thanksgiving Day in New York City in a game that would determine the championship. A really fantastic piece of college football history.

" Sacred to the Memory of the Illustrious Champion of Liberty General George Washington First President of the United States of America" engraved and published by John Donlevy . The artist lists himself as an "intaglio-chromographic and Electrographic Engraver". This is a fine example of American calligraphic and stipple engraving. The face of the portrait is based on Stuart's " Antheaeum " painting surrounded by swirls and elaborate calligraphic design typical of this artist. This is the second state, according to Charles Hart's "Catalogue of the Engraved Portraits of Washington...

By John Webber
Located in Paonia, CO
A Man of the Sandwich Islands Dancing (Hawaii) is from the 1784 First Edition Atlas Accompanying Capt. James Cook and King; Third and Final Voyage of Captain James Cook. John Webber (1752-1793) was the official artist for the third voyage of Captain James Cook (1728-1779). The purpose of this voyage was to discover the Northwest Passage and to explore the Pacific Ocean north of the Equator. These engravings were published in 1784-85 by G. Nichol and Thomas Cadell of London in the four large format atlas, Voyage to the Pacific Ocean. Captain Cook was an extraordinary explorer known for discovering and mapping unknown territory and for his many contributions to the scientific world. These original engravings from Webber’s drawings and paintings are only a glimpse into this great man’s historical contributions that make him one of the greatest explorers of all times.

Portrait of Carlos de Colonna, Marques de la Espinar
By Paulus Pontius
Located in Middletown, NY
(after Anthonie Van Dyck) Engraving on cream laid paper, 9 1/4 x 6 3/8 inches (234 x 161 mm), full margins. Water stain throughout bottom, diagonal creases in the area of the bottom right corner, paper tape along top edge on recto. A very well inked impression.
__________Flemish painter and engraver Paulus Pontius was born in Antwerp in 1603, and it was in this city that his full life would unfold. At the young age of 13, he was apprenticed to the still life painter Osias Beert, and subsequently to Lucas Vosterman, who was heavily associated with the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens. Vosterman trained Pontius in the skill of engraving, which he took to immediately, finding he had great skill at recreating paintings. Pontius was able to capture the minutiae of light and shadow found on the canvas, and mastered the ability to accurately render the subtleties of brushwork in this alternate media. His success as an engraver cemented his role in the workshop of Rubens, and in 1624, when Vosterman found himself at odds with Rubens, and left Antwerp for England, Pontius assumed his role as foremost engraver in the workshop. It was in this year that Pontius took up lodgings in Rubens's home, and continued to live there until 1631, when courtship and marriage (the first of three) brought him away. After the death of Rubens in 1640, Pontius embarked on a very successful career engraving reproductions of master works by artists including Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Pieter van Avont, Abraham van Diepenbeeck...
