Will Barnet (1911-2012), who died at the age of 101, had one of the longest and most distinguished careers in the history of American art. His exceptional body of paintings and drawings, and his original style, are recognized around the world. His work has entered virtually every major museum in the United States including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Abroad he is represented in the collections of The British Museum, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and The Vatican Museum. There have been innumerable critical studies of his works in books, catalogues, and magazine articles.
A devoted printmaker, and with a technical expertise encompassing lithograph, woodcut, serigraph, and intaglio, Barnet treated printmaking as a serious undertaking in its own right. As early as 1934 he became the official printer for the Arts Students League, New York, where he had printed for the Mexican Muralist, Jose Clemente Orozco, taught, and influenced several generations of artists.
Will Barnet was a member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters. He lived in Manhattan with his wife Elena who survives him, as well as his sons Peter, Richard, and Todd, and one daughter, Ona, who has modeled for many of his images.
Will Barnet is best known for his enigmatic portraits of family, made from the 1970s onwards, notably the Silent Seasons series. However, his earlier works maintain an edginess and brooding contemplation that is even more remarkable when compared with the more placid and pretty works which followed his second marriage. His early work reflected the more popular abstract styles with his later work returning to figure painting.

Will Barnet
At the beginning of his career, Will Barnet was known for his figural depictions of domestic scenes. But, as he continued to stylistically develop, Barnet arrived at abstract geometric paintings far removed from his original career. A part of the Indian Space Painters group, Barnet was inspired by Native American art in creating these divergent images. Throughout his career, Barnet oscillated between representational and abstract paintings, never fully settling on one. He has received the National Medal of Arts in 2011, and his work has been displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This work is one of three hand signed Artist's Proofs, aside from the regular edition of 50. It is one of Peter Saul's most celebrated prints; the not so subtle at all symbolism speaks for itself, such as the gigantic dollar sign and wagging tongue (money talks loudly), set against San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate bridge.
This print does not often appear on the market, as so many from this edition are already in the permanent collection of major museums and institutions.
Other examples of this work were featured in the exhibitions:
"Print Retrospective, 1966-2010", from September 16 – December 22, 2011 at the Carl Solway Gallery in Ohio, and "Peter Saul: Prints and Drawings, 1960 -1975", from February 26 – April 11, 2009, at The George Adams Gallery...
