Fritz Scholder (1937 2005) Walking Dog 1977 Lithograph, Edition 80/100 Hand signed "Scholder" lower right, numbered lower left. Full sheet size, 22 inches x 30 inches. Printer: Tamarind Institute Paper: White Arches Tamarind Institute blind stamp lower left edge and artist blind stamp center, and printers blind stamp lower right. Ships unframed. Born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) is equal parts German, French, and Luiseno, a California Mission Tribe. Scholder’s paternal grandmother was a member of the Luiseno tribe and his father was a school administrator for the Bureau of Indian affairs. This job caused Scholder to move frequently throughout his childhood. Although Scholder never considered himself an Indian, his abstract art and use of bold colors, surrealism and pop art portrayed his unique vision of the Southwestern landscape and lifestyle, making him known as a leader of the New American Art Movement. His works hold echoes of Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism and Pop Art, among other influential modern art movements. Breaking with Romantic cliches of Native genre imagery, Scholder's unique fusion style is always provocative. His refusal to conform to expectations and his rejection of limiting definitions of his identity as Native American are high watermarks in postwar American painting. He both acknowledged his biracial identity and reminded us of the country’s legacy of eradicating Indigenous people and culture. Early in his career, Scholder received grants from the Rockefeller, Whitney and Ford Foundations. After five years in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he left his teaching position at the famed Institute of American Indian Arts to travel in Europe and North Africa and to be a full-time artist. Scholder added sculpture and printmaking in lithography, etching and monotypes to his oeuvre, often creating works in series. Represented by iconic gallerist Elaine Horwitch, beginning in the late 1960s, Fritz Scholder rose to legendary status. Several books have been published on Fritz Scholder and the artist has been profiled in two documentary films for public television. In a single year, exhibitions of his work were seen in Japan, France, China, Germany and at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Fritz Scholder died in 2005 at the age of 67. Since his death, interest in Scholder's art has continued to grow. In 2008, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian mounted a career retrospective of his work, with exhibitions in both New York and Washington D. C.

Born in 1937 in Breckenridge, Minnesota, Fritz Scholder knew what he must do at an early age. As a high school student at Pierre, South Dakota, his teacher was Oscar Howe, a noted Sioux artist. In the summer of 1955, Scholder attended the Mid-West Art and Music Camp at the University of Kansas. He was voted Best Boy Artist and President of the Art Camp. He studied with Robert B. In 1956, Scholder graduated from Ashland High School in Wisconsin and took his freshman year at Wisconsin State University in Superior, where he studied with Arthur Kruk, James Grittner and Michael Gorski. In 1957, Scholder moved with his family to Sacramento, California where he studied with Wayne Thiebaud. Thiebaud invited Scholder to join him, along with Greg Kondos and Peter Vandenberg in creating a cooperative gallery in Sacramento. Scholder’s first show received an exceptional review. Scholder’s next one man exhibition was at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. His work was being shown throughout the region, including the Palace of Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Upon graduation, from Sacramento State University, where he studied with Tarmo Pasto and Raymond Witt, Scholder was invited to participate in the Rockefeller Indian Art Project at the University of Arizona in 1961. Scholder is one-quarter Luseino, a California Mission tribe. He met Cherokee designer, Lloyd Kiva New and studied with Hopi jeweler, Charles Loloma.
