Les Belles et la Bête: Before the Hunt
Located in Middletown, NY
Resist ground etching and engraving on cream wove paper, 22 x 39 inches (558 x 990 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated, and numbered 27/160 in pencil, lower margin. With the blindstamp of the printer, Robert E. Townsend, in the lower left margin. A beautiful, richly inked impression of this highly detailed, large image. In very good condition with minor mat tone, extremely minor scattered light surface soiling, and one pin-point sized dot of brown discoloration on the lower left margin, recto, well outside of image area. [Milton 99]. Milton states that there is a metaphorical evolution at the root of his body of graphic work, and with Les Belles et la Bête, Before the Hunt, he found himself at a crossroads that he viewed as a sort of artistic adolescence, which he felt demanded a natural examination of mysteries of sexual awakening. The image is brimming with fantastical images and metaphors for the confrontation of sexual exploration; a Freudian analyst appears in the left of the image, scattered tableaus of paired figures...

Interiors I: Family Reunion — A penetrating scene with a hidden homage to Eadwea
Located in Middletown, NY
Interiors I: Family Reunion 1984 Resist ground etching and engraving on BFK Rives wove paper, 20 x 36 inches (501 x 913 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 49/175 in pencil, lower margin. In excellent condition with minor mat tone. A luminous, rich, and well-inked impression of this haunting image, with astonishing detail and depth. Framed handsomely under museum grade glass with archival materials in a solid wood frame with silver finish. [Milton 107] Intended to be a stand alone image in its inception, Family Reunion ended up spawning seven additional images, and became a sort of Primo Pensiero in the sprawling, masterpiece suite now known as Interiors. The suite took eight years to complete, and consists of works of varying format, psychological intensity, and subject matter. The thematic darkness in the eight images waxes and wanes, and Milton intentionally included several interlude works to lighten the tension he felt while composing several of the darker images. The first two in the series, Family Reunion, and Hotel Paradise Café, were meant to be companion pieces. The equilibrium of each composition is anchored on a central brooding figure; a man (perhaps based on a Thomas Eakins portrait of the American anthropologist Frank Hamilton...

Les Belles et La Bête I: The Rehearsal
Located in Middletown, NY
Resist ground etching and engraving on Rives heavyweight buff paper, 20 x 36 inches (508 x 914 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 103/160 in pencil, lower margin. Minor mat tone. A rich and finely printed impression of this complex and iconic work by Milton. Framed handsomely under Plexiglas with archival materials in a solid wood frame with silver finish. [Milton 98]. Milton states that in the evolution of his body of graphic work he found himself at point that necessitated the exertion of nerve in his subject matter. He found it imperative for growth to explore whether his compositions had previously been too polite, and through this process he experienced a great burst of artistic and psychic liberation. Milton refers to this awakening as a sort of adolescence, which he felt demanded a natural examination of mysteries of sexual awakening. Les Belles et La Bête...

l'Amateur d'Art
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "l'Amateur d'Art" c.1990 is an original color lithograph by noted French artist Guy Buffet, b.1943. It is hand signed and numbered H.C 4/10 in pencil by the artist. The artwork size is 24 x 18 inches, framed size is 32.25 x 24.15 inches. Custom framed in a wooden black an gold frame, with decorated gold color matting. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame has some minor restorations, barely visible. About the artist: Guy Buffet was born in Paris on January 13, 1943. His parents were in the restaurant business and were fond of art. Guy Buffet learned early that his neighborhood had once been the home of such artistic figures as Chagall, Matise, Picasso, and Modigliani. "At home there was always talk about these famous painters," he says, "and I used to listen to these conversations while doing my homework at the kitchen table. I remember drawing on napkins and the linen tablecloths while my brothers were busy with kitchen preparations." On his twelfth birthday, his mother gave him his first box of paints, a couple of brushes, a wooden easel, and several canvases. The young Buffet was soon displaying paintings on the walls of the family restaurant. He sold his first watercolor painting to an American who was visiting the family restaurant that next year. At age 14 he was transferred from public school to the famed Beaux Arts de Toulon and later studied advanced painting in Paris. By age 18, he joined the French Navy where his artistic abilities were so distinguished, he was named the official artist of the French Navy and given the prestigious assignment to "paint the world." "In the South Pacific, while I was on shore leave and hitchhiking with some fellow sailors," Buffet says, "we were picked up by a motorist who was the mayor of the city. After visiting the ship and seeing some of my paintings, the mayor talked to the captain and got permission for me to put on an exhibit in town." From this came a series of one-man exhibitions in exotic Tahiti and New Caledonia. Afterwards, the French Navy helped organize his first exhibition in the Hawaiian Islands introducing Buffet to what he called "Paradise." The year was 1963 and the rest, as they say is history. Guy Buffet soon settled in this "Hawaiian Paradise" after the prominent Cooke family offered to provide him living and studio space after his Navy discharge. What followed were several commissions from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts which emblazoned major murals at libraries across the state of Hawaii. Of his paintings, Buffet says, "I invite the viewer to share my experience. I take you into my world like a guest into my home. I want you to be comfortable, relaxed, happy; to forget about problems and sorrows. If you like it and want to come back, my world is yours." Guy Buffet has also been commissioned by many corporations including Aloha Airlines, Grand Marnier, Westin Hotels, and Ritz Carlton Hotels. He has literally toured the world with one-man shows and exhibitions. One can feel the international influence of his Hawaiian creations, reminiscent of the French master Gaughin who depicted Polynesia from Tahiti generations earlier. Enthralled with the history and culture of the islands, Buffet continues to create famous images depicting the folklore of the Hawaiian people, animals and events. Buffet‚s whimsical Hawaiian world is where cows wear flower leis and bellow, "Amoo" and road signs bear, Baby Pig Crossing to allow mama piglet and her babies to cross a country road. His vibrant color palette helps evoke a playfulness that brings out the child in every aficionado. While some of his other works are positively Polynesian, a great deal of it is decidedly derived from his French heritage. Depicting French sommeliers, chefs, and waiters mid-shift, Guy consistently captures the spirit and passion of the French people and their love of fine cuisine. Guy Buffet's images are now commissioned for a wealth of items from men's dress ties and shirts, to dinner plates, coffee cups, postcards, calendars, and women's wear. Buffet is also the official artist for Champagne Perrier...

Interiors VI: Soundings
Located in New York, NY
Contemporary artist Peter Milton created this etching and engraving entitled "Interiors VI: Soundings" in 1989. The printed image size is 29 7/8 x 23 13/16 and paper size is 36 x 29 inches. This impression is signed, dated, and titled in pencil and inscribed “93/175” – the 93 impression of 175. “I do love to draw. I feel that I am being granted membership in the Brotherhood of Merlin, conjuring forth some apparition. As a drawing develops, I sense a vague presence coming more and more into focus, something in a white fog emerging and becoming increasingly palpable.” – P. Milton, “The primacy of touch. The Drawings of Peter Milton” “Working in layers, Milton begins with drawings based on people and places, with nods to Western art history and culture. He is a master of the appropriated image, a term that may conjure Andy Warhol and his Pop Art comrades. But Milton steps further back in history, avoiding the Pop sense of cool advertising and popular culture references. Instead, a broader cultural past is tapped through historical photographs of key players, architecture, and locales, which he reinvents by hand. He adds content drawn from his life as an avid reader – always with multiple possible interpretations – thus incorporating deeper meaning in his cinematic worlds. Elements of Greek mythology, classical music, art history, and history coalesce in his images, which embrace the messiness, sorrow, and elation that is life. One is hard-pressed to imagine a more erudite, skilled, passionate, and cheeky soul." – T. L. Johnson and A. Shafer Peter Milton was born in Pennsylvania in 1930. He studied for two years at the Virginia Military Institute...

Artist and Model Howard Hodgkin abstracted orange and black watercolor gouache
Located in New York, NY
Large black and marigold orange abstract interior scene of a bust in front of a window with fingerprints and painterly brushstrokes. Rich color and texture ideal for hanging in minimalist, contemporary and modern living spaces. Signed by the artist with initials, dated 1980, and numbered lower center in red crayon. Soft-ground etching with hand coloring on Stoneridge mould-made etching paper. This print is one of a group of soft-ground etchings (Artist and Model, Artist and Model (in green and yellow), Those…Plants). The two versions of Artist and Model are printed from the same plates, but in different colors. In this iteration, marigold orange contrasts beautifully with rich black ink. Seen in all three prints is a bust in silhouette before a window. Artist and Model is a surprising name, as Hodgkin never painted or drew from a model. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Artist and Model at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s. Catalogue reference: Elizabeth Knowles...

SABBATH ANGELS Signed Lithograph, Watercolor Portrait, Angels, Candlesticks
Located in Union City, NJ
SABBATH ANGELS is an original hand drawn lithograph(not a photo reproduction or digital print) by the American artist/sculptor Chaim Gross, presenting an impressive sculptural drawing of two majestic female angels welcoming the sabbath as two lit candlesticks glow beneath the wings of the yellow angel. SABBATH ANGELS was hand proofed and printed from lithographic plates on archival Arches paper, 100% acid free. SABBATH ANGELS is a contemporary style angel portrait measuring 14 x 20.5 inches, image size is 9.25 x 15 inches, a very fine impression pulled from hand drawn lithography plates. Printed in transparent watercolor shades of light blue, light brown red, yellow and graphite black for the pencil drawing using the age-old hand printing methods first used in fine art lithography printmaking. Chaim Gross,(1904 - 1991) was a sculptor, artist, and teacher, known for his wood carvings, sculptures of moving human figures, religious imagery, acrobats, mothers and children. Chaim was born on March 17, 1904 to a Jewish family in Austrian Galicia, in the village of Wolowa in the Carpathian Mountains. In 1911, his family moved to Kolomyia. During World War I, Russian forces invaded Austria-Hungary; amidst the turmoil, the Grosses fled Kolomyia. They returned when Austria retook the town in 1915, refugees of the war. When World War I ended, Gross and brother Avrom-Leib went to Budapest, where Gross attended the city's art academy and studied with painter Béla Uitz, though within a year a new regime under Miklos Horthy took over and attempted to expel all Jews and foreigners from the country. After being deported from Hungary, Gross began art studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna shortly before emigrating to New York City in 1921. In the U.S., Gross's studies continued at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, where he studied sculpture with Elie Nadelman and others, and at the Art Students League, with sculptor Robert Laurent. He also attended the Educational Alliance Art School, studying under Abbo Ostrowsky. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Gross exhibited at the Salons of America exhibitions at the Anderson Galleries and, beginning in 1928, at the Whitney Studio Club (the precursor to the Whitney Museum of American Art). In March 1932 Gross had his first solo exhibition at Gallery 144 in New York City. Also in 1932, Gross married Renee Nechin (1909-2005), and they had two children, Yehuda and Mimi (Mimi Gross is a New York-based artist, and was married to the artist Red Grooms from 1963-1976). In 1933, Gross joined the government's PWAP (Public Works of Art Project), which transitioned into the WPA (Works Progress Administration). Under these programs Gross taught and demonstrated art, made sculptures for schools and public colleges, and created works for Federal buildings including the Federal Trade Commission Building, and for the France Overseas and Finnish Buildings at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Gross was also recognized during these years with a silver medal at the 1937 Exposition universelle in Paris. Chaim Gross, Sculptor by Josef Vincent Lombardo, the first major book on Gross, came out in 1949 and included a catalogue raisonne of his sculpture. In the 1950s Gross began to make more bronze sculptures alongside his wood and stone pieces, and in 1957 and 1959 he traveled to Rome to work with famed bronze foundries including the Nicci foundry. In 1959, a survey of Gross's sculpture in wood, stone, and bronze was featured in the exhibit Four American Expressionists curated by Lloyd Goodrich at the Whitney Museum of American Art, with work by Abraham Rattner, Doris Caesar, and Karl Knaths. In 1963, Gross and his family moved from their longtime residence at 30 W. 105th Street to Greenwich Village, following the purchase of a four-story historic townhouse at 526 LaGuardia Place, which is now the Renee & Chaim Gross Foundation. In 1974, the Smithsonian American Art Museum held the exhibition, Chaim Gross: Sculpture and Drawings, and in 1976, a selection from Gross's important collection of historic African...

Howard Hodgkin Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art abstract black white
Located in New York, NY
Abstract black, white and tan print of interior scene with dots, lines, shadow and painted brushstroke texture. Ideal for display in minimalist, modern and contemporary spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, expressionist, and abstract. Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art by Howard Hodgkin. Soft-ground etching on buff BFK Rives mould-made paper. Edition 100: this impression 36/100. Signed by the artist, numbered 36/100, and dated 79 lower center in red crayon. Printed from the same plate as Early Evening in the Museum of Modern Art. Published by Petersburg Press. This print depicts an abstracted scene, perhaps a sculpture in front of a window in the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, in Hodgkin's signature painterly style. The expressive mark-making in this print is an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Hodgkin used his hand as a mark-making tool, combining these textures with loose and urgent brushwork. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s. Part of a series of four prints reflecting on a visit to the Museum...
