Silkscreen Edition of 125 + 1AP Philomena Marano has spent decades “penetrat[ing] the soul of Coney Island to reveal its twin promises of candy-colored paradise and garishly ornate nightmare,” as Ann Aptaker describes, through the prints and cut-paper collage in her “American Dream-land” series (1979-). These colorful, graphic style works evoke the energy and amusement of Coney Island through depictions of the rides, the boardwalk, clowns, and food vendors. Many are large-scale papier collé installations, a technique Marano learned from Robert Indiana in whose studio she formerly assisted. In conjunction with “American Dream Land,” in 1981 Marano and Richard Eagan co-founded the Coney Island Hysterical Society, which undertakes projects such as restoring old rides in response to the alarming rate at which they were shutting down in the fabled amusement park of their childhood. Artist Statement and CV: Of his work, artist Elwood Howell says, "The greater body of my work is primary landscapes and seascapes of an imaginary nature created in the studio. Most works have a generally high horizon as a focal point to lure ones eye into the simple composition. The large area below the horizon down to the base of the canvas gives the viewer's eye freedom to roam the surface. This space gives the painting life much as soil nourishes the very roots of a tree. The imagery at the horizon gives a focal point and the expanse above serves as atmosphere to set the mood. This has been a format I have used for over forty years and it still intrigues me. In the process of correlating the colors, values and markings, with the fore mentioned ink, paint, charcoal, pencil and even by sanding, a visual conversation begins between the painting and the painter. Thus, by adjusting again and again, from hints given by previously applied paint, sometimes even an abrupt and complete change over the earlier endeavors is commanded. The discourse will probably continue forward, just as communications sometimes do with people, for new thoughts can hoover about and over time a need is created for further deliberation. Thus some "completed" works have required changes years later. Sometimes discussions, of whatever nature, never seem to be finished. When painting is viewed down the road, by another person, maybe they, too, will encounter a visual voice, which probably will be of a totally different nature than has been envisioned. This artwork Titled "Happy Sisters" 1977 in a color off set lithograph by renown Chinese/American artist Wai Ming A.K.A Lo Hing Kwok, b.1938. It is hand signed and inscribed A.P (Artist Proof) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 29 x 19 inches, sheet size is 36 x 25 inches, framed size is 42.25 x 31 inches. Custom framed in a wooden gold leaf rubbed, scratched style frame, with off white matting. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright. About the artist: Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...
