Rough-legged Buzzard: 19th C. Hand-colored Lithograph by J. Gould & Edward Lear
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Archibuteo Lagopus" (Rough-Legged Buzzard) by John Gould and Edward Lear, from Gould's "Birds of Great Britain", published in London between 1862 and 1873. The print depicts an adult Rough-Legged Buzzard perched on a branch of a tree looking to the left. This beautiful framed Gould hand-colored lithograph is presented in a gold-colored wood frame and cream-colored French mat, embellished by a gold-colored fillet. The frame measures 33" high, 25.5" wide and 1.25" thick. It is in excellent condition There are several other unframed Gould bird lithographs available on our 1stdibs and InCollect storefronts. Two or more of these striking lithographs would make an attractive display grouping. A discount is available for purchase of a set depending on the number. These additional Gould hummingbirds may be viewed by typing Timeless Intaglio in the 1stdibs or InCollect search field to be taken to our storefront. John Gould (1804-1881]) was an English ornithologist and artist. He, like his American contemporary John James Audubon, published a number of books on birds in the mid 19th century, illustrated by hand-colored lithographs. His wife and fellow artist, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear and Henry Constantine Richter produced lithographs for his various publications. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. Charles Darwin referenced Gould’s work in his book, "On the Origin of Species" and Gould named a bird after Darwin; "Darwin's finches". Gould began his career in London as a taxidermist, but in 1827 became the first curator and conservator at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. In this position naturalists brought him collections of birds from all over the world. He began creating drawings and eventually hand-colored lithographs with his wife and Edward Lear, which were the basis for his first publications. Darwin brought him specimens from the Galapagos Islands, including 12 species of finches which had never been described. In 1838, Gould and his wife travelled to Australia and their work led to the seven volume publication of “The Birds of Australia”. Gould had a fascination for hummingbirds and collected specimens of 320 varieties before ever seeing a live hummingbird on a trip to the United States in 1857. He eventually published “A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds". Other large publications include: "The Birds of Europe"," A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans”, “A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia, and the Adjacent Islands”, “A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America”, “The Birds of Asia”, “The Birds of Great Britain” and "The Birds of New Guinea and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia". John Gould (1804-1881) was a British ornithologist and illustrator who is best known for his monumental work, "The Birds of Europe," published between 1832 and 1837. Gould was born in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, and began working as a taxidermist and natural history dealer in London in the 1820s. In 1827, Gould was appointed the first curator and preserver of birds at the Zoological Society of London, where he began to build his collection of specimens and began to study the birds of the world. He published his first monograph, "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains," in 1831, which included 80 plates of Himalayan birds. Gould continued to publish numerous volumes on the birds of the world throughout his life, including "The Birds of Australia" (1840-1848) and "The Birds of Great Britain" (1862-1873). His works were highly regarded for their accuracy and detail, and he was one of the most prominent ornithologists of his time. In addition to his work as an ornithologist, Gould was also a successful businessman, and he used his profits to fund expeditions and to support the scientific community. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1843, and he was awarded the Royal Medal...

Daniel Marot's The Siege of the Dutch Fortified City of Ypres by Louis XIV
By Daniel Marot
Located in Alamo, CA
"Ypres, Grand Ville Riche & Marchande" is an engraving and etching by Daniel Marot (le Vieux) (1661–1752). It depicts a view of the siege of the city of Ypres and its citadel on the left in the Spanish Netherlands by Louis XIV's troops. This battle took place between March 18 and March 25, 1678, as part of the Franco-Dutch War. Marot illustrated in great detail (best appreciated with magnification) the French attack on the strong pentagonal citadel on the extreme left, which had been built recently in anticipation of a French attack. The trenches built by the French approaching the town are seen on the right. King Louis XIV can be seen in the foreground surveying the battle mounted on his white horse, surrounded by his officers and troops. The print is presented in an attractive ornate black wood frame with a cream-colored double mat with a black inner trim. It is glazed with plexiglas. The frame measures 25.38" x 22.63" x .88". The engraving, frame, mat and glazing are in excellent condition. Artist: Daniel Marot (1661–1752) was also called "Le Vieux". He was the son of the famous architect, Jean Marot. Marot had diverse interests and talents. In addition to his art, he designed garden projects, architectural ornaments, furniture, and even upholstery. Marot as a Huguenot protestant was forced to leave France in 1685 following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He emigrated to Holland, where he worked for William of Orange (an arch enemy of his former employer Louis XIV). Marot was largely responsible for the interiors of Williams palace at the Loo. In 1694 he went Britain as William had married Queen Mary and he had become King William III of England. He later returned to Holland in about 1698 and died in the Hague in 1752. He left a lasting legacy on the decorative arts in the Netherlands, where his grand version of the Louis XIV style remained popular into the 1730s. Historical Background: In October 1677, Mary Stuart, niece and possible successor of Charles II of England, married Louis XIV's arch enemy William III of Orange...

Pianta di Roma e del Campo Marzo - Etching by G.B. Piranesi - 1774
Located in Roma, IT
Pianta di Roma e del Campo Marzo is a very big dimensions etching and burin with fresh impression on paper, realized around 1774 by Giovan Battista Piranesi. It is realized on three joined sheets of thick laid paper. In very good condition except for some signs of the time and a usual and diffused yellowing of the paper and usual folds of the paper. Engraved title in Italian: (Plan of Rome and the Campus Martius). Dedication: To Clement XIIII Pontifex Maximus Patron of the Fine Arts, G.B. Piranesi Architect. The plates are still preserved at the Calcografia dell’Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica in Rome, in the order specified by the Calcographie Piranesi in the Paris editions, following the first title page of Tomo I of the Vedute di Roma, marked by the numbers 683-685. The dating The dating of the work is complex: In the 1792 the Francesco Piranesi's catalog, son of the author, assigned the artwork to 1778, a date which, although very late - the author dies. Really on November 9 of that year - is accepted by Focillon and Hind. This dating, however, is certainly based on an error, because in the Warning at the top of the map, the author refers to the "approval" that designed to show the Sanctity of N. Mister Pope CLEMENT XIV happily reigning", for which the work can not be later than 1774. In support of this dating, it is a sample of the Catalog of Works, described by Scott, which contains three handwritten entries for three Views of Rome dating back to 1774, and indicates that the map was already available. Thus the most likely date for this plan is c. 1774, on the basis of the dedication to the ruling pope, who died in September that year, and because it is mentioned for the first time in a state of the Catalogo inciso, itself datable to 1774, as being included in the collection of the Vedute di Roma. The numbers positioned in front of the monuments in the 4 columns of indices under the plan refer to the main sites illustrated in the Antichità Romane, Della Magnificenza, Campo Marzio. "Plan of Rome and Campo Marzo" The "Plan of Rome and Campo Marzo" belongs to the peak of Piranesi's career. Born from the need to offer a reference plant that accompanied the more than 100 tables...
