Discover new works by Anna Harley available to buy online and in our art gallery. Anna Harley is a professional fine art screen-printer, making prints at Spike Print Studio in Bristol. She has a Masters Degree in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking and lives in South Bristol. Her handmade prints are produced in limited editions, so each print is an original artwork, not a reproduction of an artwork made in a different medium. She says, “the screenprinting process suits my practice, because it allows me to build images in fine layers of ink, printing layer upon layer until I am happy with the final print. I use a combination of drawing, digital photography and objects directly exposed on the screen, to create these individual layers. I enjoy the tension this creates in my images – is the print based on a drawing or photograph? Is it attached fabric, pencil marks or ink? While engaged in the creative process, I try to stay open minded about how the finished print will look, to allow the print to make itself – print is an extremely process led way of making art and allowing the unexpected to happen and taking advantage of these happy accidents allows the work to stay fresh and exciting.” She is inspired by how it feels to be outside, tree silhouettes, passing seasons, the weather, and the sky and how it changes from sunrise to evening. “I love things that sparkle and twinkle. I often use metallic pigments and, in a move that fully embraced my inner kitsch, I have recently made a snow print using white glitter. ” Anna’s work is rooted within the Landscape tradition, while the fabric textures in her prints are an echo of her Scandinavian Arts and Crafts...

Claire Sherman is a painter who made her first lithographs at Shark’s in the summer of 2018 including the prints Underbrush and Tree and Water. Her paintings and prints propel the viewer into a claustrophobic and unstable world through a perspective that shimmies between representation and abstraction. Her works reference idealistic visions of the sublime, while the medley of imagery presented eliminates the need to identify the actual places – these works do not seek to portray a specific view or experience. They address the ubiquity of imagery we associate with the genre of landscape, nullifying a sense of particularity.
Claire Sherman is an Associate Professor at Drew University in New Jersey. Philomena Marano has spent decades “penetrat[ing] the soul of Coney Island to reveal its twin promises of candy-colored paradise and garishly ornate nightmare,” as Ann Aptaker describes, through the prints and cut-paper collage in her “American Dream-land” series (1979-). These colorful, graphic style works evoke the energy and amusement of Coney Island through depictions of the rides, the boardwalk, clowns, and food vendors. Many are large-scale papier collé installations, a technique Marano learned from Robert Indiana in whose studio she formerly assisted. In conjunction with “American Dream Land,” in 1981 Marano and Richard Eagan co-founded the Coney Island Hysterical Society, which undertakes projects such as restoring old rides in response to the alarming rate at which they were shutting down in the fabled amusement park of their childhood.
Ms. Marano is a daughter of Brooklyn. She holds a BFA from Pratt Institute, is an intimate of the visual poetry of Coney Island, created the winning poster for the first Spirit of Brooklyn poster...
