About the Item

15 3/8" x20 1/2" digital drawing edition of 5 This print is presented in a natural wood frame, please see additional images of the presentation. Ross Racine creates his hyperreal suburban landscapes with a uniquely developed drawing method combining the languages of drawing and digital imaging. The detailing within the greyscale in this image and the tone of the work evolves during the process of creation, culminating in a mood which matches the character of the landscape. Ross Racine writes: "The subjects of my work may be interpreted equally as models for planned communities or as aerial views of fictional suburbs, referring to the dual role of the computer as a tool for urban planning as well as image capture. At the intersection of two approaches, mapping and landscape art, the drawings use a perpendicular instead of an angled viewpoint to combine the abstract qualities inherent in maps with the descriptive powers of landscape art. Encouraging a reflective attitude by its distant viewpoint, the aerial view is used here to comment on society's occupation and transformation of nature. In addition, these invented suburbs exaggerate existing situations and lead the subject matter into the investigative domain of science fiction. Examining the relation between design and actual lived experience, the images subvert the apparent rationality of urban design. Beyond the suburban example, my digital drawings are a way of thinking visually about design, the city and society as a whole."

ABOUT: In this exhibition, Lance Clayton’s aquatic, figurative photographs contain an attention to detail that leaves the viewer constantly discovering new information within them. His oblique compositions are a profusion of the quirky, the surreal, and the ambiguous, all of which are permeated by a haunting presence. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. The invitational image, “Swim”, is an illustrative shot of a man doing the butterfly stroke, his back to the viewer with arms powerfully extended across the frame, as if to embrace the open, infinite skies above him. The grainy quality of the piece is created using a dark room technique in which tissue is layered upon the photograph, creating an allover ethereal atmosphere reminiscent of Edward Steichen’s early work. Another image, “Rungs”, photographed in Lake Okeechobee, Florida, shows a rusty silver pool ladder descending into a vista of midnight blue water. The highlights and reflections in the water, however, resemble the night sky and thereby disorient the viewer’s perspective. The piece entitled "Kim, Orem, Utah” expresses some of Clayton’s more hauntingly sensual themes. The photograph displays a woman floating in a pool, her darkly lit face above the water and her serpentine body below. The sinister, yet lyrical, mood of the photograph is largely emblematic of the entire collection exhibited. Clayton’s inspiration is primarily grounded in dreams, with references to notable artists such as Diane Arbus, George Hurrell, and Duane Michaels...
