About the artist: Massimo Vitali was born in Como, Italy, in 1944. He studied photography at the London College of Printing, in the 1970s initially working as a photojournalist, but at the beginning of the 80s a growing mistrust in the belief that photography had an absolute capacity to reproduce the subtleties of reality led to a change in his career path. Vitali worked in cinematography for film and television before beginning a fine art practice in 1995. Over the next two decades, he would gain recognition for his highly detailed, epic-scale panoramas — sociopolitical observations of the natural habitat of humankind at leisure. Vitali’s iconic series of beach panoramas, captured from a distance with an elevated large-format camera platform, began in the light of drastic political changes in Italy. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance and Old Flemish masters, in which the central space is fully exploited and the urban or natural landscape becomes the background, Vitali’s photographs grasp the viewer by capturing highly detailed observances of the recreational habitats of modern civilization. Vitali’s work has been collected in six monographs: Beach and Disco, Natural Habitats, Landscapes With Figures, Swimming Pools, Short Stories and Entering A New World. Complete series of 20 original black and white etchings on oblong folio and laid paper, in first state before numeration. On frontispiece with date “1763”, dedication to Prince Marco Foscareno and name and address of Ludovico Furlanetto. Each plate is titled and signed on plate "Jo. Bap. Brustoloni sculp." on the lower right margin. Complete title of the series: Prospectuum aedium, viarumque insigniorum Urbis venetiarum nautico certamine, ac nundinis adiectis. Tomus Primus, tabulas XII complectens, quas Antonius Canale coloribus expressit – Joannes Baptista Brustolon aere incidit. Serenissimo Principi D.D. Marco Foscareno Egregio, emerito, sapientissimo Augustae Republicae Duci D.D.D. Anno AE C. 1763 ab V.C. 1341. This series is considered the most important one by Brustolon after Canaletto (from the engravings of Visentini), and was edited in a first version of 12 tables and in a second version of 22 tables. However, Succi affirms that the I state series includes just 20 tables, and the missing two vary from suite to suite so that this series can be considered complete. Very fresh and bright sheets in wide margins, with restored little tear on 4 sheets and a very light vertical fold on center. Papers show the following watermarks: Big cartouche with half-moon Big cartouche with letters “FO” and “AS” Bound and ripples on paper. In detail: Prospectuum Aedium Viarumque Insignorum Ubis Venetiarum is one of the finest of Venetian topographical print suites, equal in relevance to the publications of Carlevarijs, Canaletto-Visentini, and Marieschi, preciously rare, especially in the first edition (of four) with all plates in first state and in excellent state of preservation. ABOUT THE ARTIST Kerr Eby was born in 1890 in Tokyo, Japan, the son of Methodist missionaries from Canada. The family returned to Vancouver when Eby was only three, and he grew up studying art encouraged by his parents as his mother was from a family of prominent artists. By age twelve, he had lived in Vancouver, Kingston, Toronto and Bracebridge where he found work as a ‘printer’s devil’ on the local Bracebridge newspaper. After graduating from high school in 1907, Eby moved to New York City to study art, first at the Pratt Institute, and later at the Art Students League. He enrolled in art classes at Pratt Institute while working for a lithographic firm earning $4.00 a week. His pay barely covered his room and drawing supplies. Within a year, starving and feeling defeated, he returned to Canada and was employed by a surveying party in Northern Ontario. Eby gradually regained his dream of becoming an artist, and in his spare time, he began to draw the surrounding wilderness landscapes. By fall he had returned to New York to attend night classes at the Art Students League while working for another lithographic firm. He spent several more summers surveying in Northern Ontario before he was able to make a living as an illustrator. During this period he formed several friendships with influential artists including John Henry Twachtman and Childe Hassam and joined a summer artists' colony founded by them at Cos Cob, Connecticut. He supported himself by working as a magazine illustrator and at the American Lithographic Company. Through diligent study and practice, Eby refined both his drawing and printmaking techniques. In 1917, when the United States entered World War I, Eby joined the U.S. Army. Failing to obtain a commission as an artist, he was assigned first to ambulance duty and later as a sergeant in the 40th Engineers in France. He spent most of WWI on the front line as a camouflager of the field artillery ‘big guns”. On his time off duty, he would sketch everything he witnessed, from the explosive big guns and men in action to the dead soldiers in the field. He sent the drawings home each week, and upon his return from the war, they became the basis for his first successful group of etchings. He continued creating his war-related prints throughout the 1920s and '30s as his work became widely exhibited Frederick Keppel, the renowned print dealer and a relative of Eby, became the exclusive agent for many of his print editions. With another global conflict beginning in the mid-1930s, Eby wanted to show the world the true face of war...

Architectural draughtsman, etcher. Born in Lustdorf, near Odessa, Russia, to a British father and Russian mother. Traveled extensively with his family before studying architecture in St Petersburg, with further studies at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Atelier Redan, Paris. Practiced architecture in Moscow and was co-designer of the Metropole Hotel, in 1898. Moved to London in 1907 and was employed as an architectural perspectivist. After a sponsored visit to Rome and Venice he had a solo exhibit at the Fine Art Society, 1912, 'Watercolours of London and Venice'; followed by a further four shows. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers..., and Connell & Sons. His etchings were published in London by H C Dickens,1913-24, and a folio of his work 'Architectural watercolors and etchings of William Walcot' was published, in 1919. Elected RE, 1920; FRIBA, 1922; Associate British School at Rome. A foremost architectural draughtsman, he worked from studios in London, Oxford and Rome.
