James Alphege Brewer was well known in the early 20th century as a producer of color etchings of European cathedrals and other scenes of church, college, and community. He was born July 24, 1881, in the Kensington section of London, England, the son of Henry W. Brewer, noted artist of historical architecture and prominent convert to the Catholic Church, and the grandson of John Sherren Brewer, Jr., “the brilliant editor of the Calendar of Letters of Henry VIII.” His great uncle was E. Cobham Brewer, the polymath who compiled Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. Among his older siblings were the artist Henry C. Brewer and the organist and writer John Francis Brewer.
Brewer attended the Westminster School of Art in London, where his brother Henry also trained. In 1910, he married Florence Emma Lucas, an accomplished painter in oil and watercolor, whose father was the noted landscape artist George Lucas and whose great uncle was David Lucas, the famous engraver for John Constable. Florence's brothers Edwin and George assisted Brewer in the printing of Brewer's etchings.
Brewer exhibited at the Royal Academy (RA) and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), at the Paris Salon of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and in the shows of the Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA). He became an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1929 and a full member in the last two years of his life. He was also a member of the Hampstead Society of Artists, the Society of Graphic Art, and the Ealing Arts Club, where he was first Honorary Art Secretary and then Honorary Art Chairman. The latest release of Australian photographer Tom Blachford’s long-running project, Midnight Modern.
Loosening the shackles of Palm Springs and Mid Century, Blachford’s large scale works explores some of the outer reaches of the Modernist movement in Architecture, and captured using only the light of the full moon.
Blachford's series is a surreal ode to the landscapes of California and its cache of pristine Modernist buildings. Shot entirely at night, bathed in moonlight, the homes, vintage cars, and foliage appear as they have been captured in another space and time. Recognizing the locations may be easy, but it is more difficult to identity when the image was actually taken, be this day or night, in the past, present, or future. The images act as portals in time where it seems these moments exist in all places at once.
For Blachford these unique residences act as the sets for infinite narratives, both real and imagined, which the viewer is invited to script for themselves. Each image acts as a still frame for a story about to start and end simultaneously.
California has a unique geography and climate, and this gives rise to a distinct deep blue sky: a hue of moonlight ideal for this approach to architectural photography. The long exposure allows the camera to capture a world just beyond our perception and distil it into a single moment.

Robert Indiana, one of the preeminent figures in American art since the 1960s, played a central role in the development of assemblage art, hard-edge painting, Pop art, Neo-Dada, American Modernism and Modern Art. A self-proclaimed “American painter of signs,” Indiana created a highly original body of work that explores American identity, personal history, and the power of abstraction and language, establishing an important legacy that resonates in the work of many contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Roy Lectenstein, David Hockney, Romero Britto, Richard Hamilton and Robert Rauschenberg who make the written word a central element of their oeuvre.
Robert Indiana was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana on September 13, 1928. Adopted as an infant, he spent his childhood moving frequently throughout his namesake state. At 14 he moved to Indianapolis in order to attend Arsenal Technical High School, known for its strong arts curriculum. After graduating he spent three years in the U.S. Air Force and then studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in Maine, and the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland.
In 1956, two years after moving to New York, Indiana met Ellsworth Kelly, and upon his recommendation took up residence in Coenties Slip, where a community of artists that would come to include Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, and Jack Youngerman had studios. Indiana, like some of his fellow artists, scavenged the area’s abandoned warehouses for materials, creating sculptural assemblages from old wooden beams, rusted metal wheels, and other remnants of the shipping trade that had thrived in Coenties Slip. The discovery of 19th century brass stencils led to the incorporation of brightly colored numbers and short emotionally charged words onto these sculptures as well as canvases, and became the basis of his new painterly vocabulary.
Although acknowledged as a leader of Pop, Indiana distinguished himself from his Pop peers by addressing important social and political issues and incorporating profound historical and literary references into his works. This is the First Edition of the hardback monograph with dust jacket "One Thousand Drawings" by Tracey Emin - featuring reproductions of 1000 of her drawings. Tracey Emin has stirred controversy as well as acclaim since she rose to fame as the most highly publicized of the infamous Young British Artists. Though denounced by conservative critics at the outset, Emin’s work has attracted serious critical attention since the early 1990s for being consistently engaging, original, and startlingly direct. Her work has succeeded over the years in many media—from films to appliqués, embroideries, and installations—but it is in her works on paper that the honesty and frankness that have come to characterize her work are most fully realized. Edited by the artist herself from an archive of work stretching back before the beginnings of her career in the late 1980s, A Thousand Drawings is at once a collection of Emin’s works on paper, an exposé of her life as an artist, and a collectible artifact in itself. Many of these works on paper shed light on well-known multimedia pieces, previously studied in Works 1963–2006, published by Rizzoli in 2006. Stripped of the distractions of form and context, her bare and enigmatic drawings are presented on bible-thin paper in a uniquely beautiful slipcased volume, with an introduction by the artist. From considered self-portraits to pen-and-ink drawings and informal studies on lined notebook paper, this remarkable collection is as much a catalogue of Emin’s preoccupations as it is a monument to her raw and evocative talents as an artist.

About the Author
Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999 and chosen to represent Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, Emin is also a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. The author of several books, including Strangeland, her memoir, she contributes regularly to The Independent newspaper and lives and works in London.

This hand signed and numbered offset lithograph is one of the more elusive and desirable early Christo exhibition invitations, published on the occasion of his groundbreaking exhibition at the ICA in Philadelphia, when Christo was only 33 - and hand signed and numbered by Christo on the front, making it a true collectors' item.
"...By mid-September 1968, Christo's attention focused on Monuments and Projects, his one-man exhibition opening October 4 at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art. It included earlier work and four on-site projects: 1,240 Oil Barrels Mastaba, Two Tons of Wrapped Hay, Two Wrapped Trees, and Seven Wrapped Women.
Suzanne Delehanty, the assistant of ICA director Stephen Prokopoff, remembered: "I had to round up fifteen hundred-plus oil barrels, the equivalent of five freight cars full. They were to construct a truncated pyramid in our large fifty-by-fifty-foot gallery. Getting them wasn't easy. It meant disrupting oil companies' operations, since drums are needed at every stage of the delivery cycle. The materials Christo chose engaged this invisible system. Negotiations for loaning barrels were made with various companies by Stephen and Nathaniel Lieb, an ICA board member. I remember that one company wouldn't lend, but insisted on selling their barrels to us; after we returned them, they would give a refund—it was their way of doing a loan receipt. I had to convince the university business office not to worry about the ten- or fifteen-thousand-dollar invoice. We borrowed oil barrels from several companies: some did a straight loan based on an exchange of letters; others used their own system of inventory control. It was fascinating."
While the multicolored oil barrels were stacked to form a massive mastaba in the ICA ground-floor entry gallery, two other works, Two Wrapped Trees and Two Tons of Wrapped Hay, took shape on the level above. The installation crew, paid M.F.A. students, alternated between unloading barrels and making forays into the countryside to gather bales of hay. Suzanne Delehanty reflected, "The bales of hay were stacked, creating a bulky structure, covered with tarpaulin and tied with rope."
