Printed with the highest quality archival inks Open edition 89 x 58 cm 35.03 x 22.83 in Stamped on verso with 'Fill in your own signature' and 'Published by Sunday B. Morning' in blue ink. Comes with Certificate of Authenticity from Sunday B. Morning. In 1967, Andy Warhol made a Portfolio of 10 screenprint portraits of Marilyn Monroe from the publicity photo for the 1953 film “Niagara.” The portfolios of 10 screenprints were printed in an original edition of 250. All of the prints from the original edition of 250 were signed in pencil and numbered with a rubber stamp on verso; some signed in pen; some initialed on verso; some dated. Aside from this edition, 26 complete sets of Artist’s Proofs were printed, signed and lettered A-Z on verso. The first edition of the Marilyn series was very successful and many hoped the artist would print another edition. In the 70’s Warhol worked with German and Belgian printers for his European exhibitions. They proposed an edition of the Marilyn's for the European market. However, Warhol was not interested at the time and refused to help with the European edition. The original screens were brought to Europe anyway and the first unauthorised prints were produced in different colours from the original portfolio. The edition of 250 unauthorised prints were stamped in black on verso: "Published by Sunday B. Morning" and "Fill in Your own Signature.” Some prints are inscribed by Andy Warhol: "This is not by me", Warhol was well aware of the European edition of Marilyn prints and came to accept them as they were printed and published by two of his friends. Due to the popularity of the first unauthorised edition, Sunday B. Morning continued publishing Marilyn's. The subsequent edition was published in original colours, not numbered, and was stamped in blue ink to mark the difference with the first edition Sunday B. Morning colour screenprints are printed on museum board with the highest quality archival inks, after the original screenprints by Andy Warhol. They are stamped in blue ink, "Published by Sunday B. Morning" and "fill in your own signature," on verso. These prints are written about in the Andy Warhol Print CATALOGUE Raisonee and are true collectibles. Published by Sunday B. Morning, these prints are in pristine condition.

Andy Warhol

The name of American artist Andy Warhol is all but synonymous with Pop art, the movement he helped shape in the 1960s. He is known for his clever appropriation of motifs and images from popular advertising and commercials, which he integrated into graphic, vibrant works that utilized mass-production technologies such as printmaking, photography and silkscreening. Later in his career, Warhol expanded his oeuvre to include other forms of media, founding Interview magazine and producing fashion shoots and films on-site at the Factory, his world-famous studio in New York.

Born and educated in in Pittsburgh, Warhol moved to New York City in 1949 and built a successful career as a commercial illustrator. Although he made whimsical drawings as a hobby during these years, his career as a fine artist began in the mid-1950s with ink-blot drawings and hand-drawn silkscreens. The 1955 lithograph You Can Lead a Shoe to Water illustrates how he incorporated in his artwork advertising styles and techniques, in this case shoe commercials.

As a child, Warhol was often sick and spent much of his time in bed, where he would make sketches and put together collections of movie-star photographs. He described this period as formative in terms of his skills and interests. Indeed, Warhol remained obsessed with celebrities throughout his career, often producing series devoted to a famous face or an object from the popular culture, such as Chairman Mao or Campbell’s tomato soup. The 1967 silkscreen Marilyn 25 embodies his love of bright color and famous subjects.

Warhol was a prominent cultural figure in New York during the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. The Factory was a gathering place for the era’s celebrities, writers, drag queens and fellow artists, and collaboration was common. To this day, Warhol remains one of the most important artists of the 20th century and continues to exert influence on contemporary creators.
