About

"Eden Theatre - Spectacle Varie" artist: Jules Cheret . Size: 28 x 23. Year: 1880. Archival linen backed in pretty good condition; ready to frame. Original linen backed stone lithograph: Jules Cheret (May 31, 1836 - September 23, 1932) was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of poster art. Often called the father of the modern poster. This poster is a theatre advertisement for Spectacle Varie circus act at the eden theatre. The Éden-Théâtre was a large theatre (4,000 seats) in the rue Boudreau, Paris, built at the beginning of the 1880s by the architects William Klein and Albert Duclos (1842–1896) in a style influenced by orientalism. It was demolished in 1895. The poster has a lady in red with a french feather hat playing a tambourine with a mandolin guitar next to her. The act was shown everyday containing ballets, gymnasts, acrobats, pantomimes, and more.
