1885 America's Cup Sailing Yachts: Set of 3 Original 19th C. Engravings
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a set of three woodcut engravings produced in 1885 to commemorate the sailing yacht trials competition to determine the team to represent the United States in the America's Cup races off the New Jersey coast in that same year. These three beautiful woodcut engravings are part of a group of six equally attractive prints, all framed identically in gold scrolled frames with pleasing light grey French mats each with a medium grey band. Each frame measures 16.13" x 17.25" x 0.5". See Item Reference #LU117325094852 to view the other three images. These may be purchased individually for $1,075/each, as a set of three for $2,875/3 or as a set of six for $5,575/6. Any number of these engravings would make for a striking display grouping. Three American racing yachts, the Puritan, the Priscilla and the Bedouin, participating in the 1885 America’s Cup trials off the coast of New Jersey are shown in their qualifying races. The Puritan, owned by several members of the Eastern Yacht Club...

"A Game of Lacrosse": A Hand-colored 19th Century Woodcut Engraving by Hall
Located in Alamo, CA
A colorful and attractive hand-colored 19th century woodcut engraving entitled "A Game of Lacrosse" after a drawing by W. H. Hall. It was published in New York in Harper's Weekly on May 10, 1884. It depicts a scene from an intense lacrosse game. This hand-colored woodcut engraving is presented in a red mat that measures 16" high x 20.63" wide. The sheet measures 10.63" high x 15.88" wide. There is a central fold, as issued. The print is in excellent condition. Lacrosse is the oldest sport in North America, possibly originating as far back as the 1400's. The sport was first invented by Native Americans, who originally played it as a means to toughen braves for war or to settle tribal disputes. It was played by between 100 and 1,000 participants at a time. There were no strict boundaries and the game could cover miles and take days to complete. It was very violent with many injuries, which were sometimes fatal. The game was unknown to whites until the 17th century when a Jesuit priest observed Heron Indians playing it. He thought the stick and netting resembled the "crosier" carried by bishops during religious ceremonies, This led to the name "la crosse". A Canadian dentist standardized the rules of the game in 1867 and the 1st college team was created at New York University in 1877. The game gained national attention and popularity in 1956 when the Hall-of-Fame football player Jim Brown...

The Traghetto, No. 2
Located in New York, NY
A superb, early impression of this very scarce etching etching and drypoint on antique cream laid paper, with selective wiping and warm plate tone. Sixth or seventh state (of 9), or an intermediate state between the sixth and seventh states, with the carafe and the glass on the table very faintly visible and with the light, curved scratch through the base of the lowest tree trunk. MacDonald cites approximately 60 known impressions in all nine states. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp" in pencil on the tab, lower left. From "Twelve Etchings." According to MacDonald, "The site is the courtyard of the Ca' da Mosto, north of the Rialto bridge in the district of Cannaregio, Venice, Italy. This view, drawn accurately on the copper plate, is reversed, as usual, in the print." This is one of Whistler's largest and most celebrated etchings of Venice...

The Life Line
Located in New York, NY
Winslow Homer created the etching entitled “THE LIFE LINE” in 1884. This is an unsigned impression published in 1887 by “C. Klackner, 17 East 17th St., New York.” There is an etched Remarque in the lower right of an anchor between two dials. Signed in the plate, lower left “Homer 1884.” The image size (platemark) is 12.88 x 17.75 inches (32.7 x 45 cm). It is unknown why the majority of “The Life Line” edition is unsigned. This piece is framed in a 1 3/8 molding finished in gold leaf, silk-wrapped rag stock mat, rag stock backing, and finished with TruVue Museum Glass. “During the 1870s, after many disastrous shipwrecks, the public demand for higher safety standards on immigrant steamers was heard. A bolstering of the American Lifesaving Service, with brigade houses along the shore from Maine to Florida, and new lifesaving devices were introduced. One of these was the breeches buoy - a seat that carried people from the ship to shore rapidly. A trained brigade using a small cannon...
