About the Item

Salvador Dalí’s Divine Comedy is a series of 100 color wood engravings, each corresponding to a canto from Dante Alighieri’s epic poem. Created between 1960 and 1964, these engravings were based on Dalí’s original watercolor paintings from 1951 to 1960. Initially commissioned by the Italian government to honor Dante’s 700th anniversary, the project was later abandoned due to public criticism over a Spanish artist illustrating an Italian literary masterpiece. Despite this, Dalí partnered with French publisher Joseph Foret and Les Heures Claires to complete the suite independently. The engravings were produced using a complex woodcutting technique that required over 3,000 individual blocks. Each color was applied separately using its own carved block, making the printing process exceptionally detailed and labor-intensive. This meticulous approach resulted in striking, vivid illustrations that bring Dante’s journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise to life. The complete set is typically issued in six volumes, each featuring a selection of engravings accompanied by the text, presented here in French. The individual prints measure approximately 13 x 10.25 inches (33 x 26 cm) and are printed on fine Rives vellum paper, renowned for its durability and refined texture. Dalí’s Divine Comedy remains a remarkable fusion of surrealism and classical literature, showcasing his unique artistic interpretation of one of the most celebrated works in Western literature.
