Leo Guida. Sensitive to current issues, artistic movements and historical techniques, Leo Guida has been able to weave with many generations of young people in the course of his career, a productive conversation on art and the function of the artist. He was a teacher at the Liceo Artistico in Latina from 1969 to 1985, and he trained many of the artists who today characterize the Italian cultural scene. Copious was his production of graphic works in which Guida showed all his talent for the techniques of chalcography, etching, aquatint and burin etc. In his pedagogical work he led students to observe both plastic forms and internal evolutionary dynamics and not the history of art.

Leo Guida
Prolific throughout the 1960s and 1970s, artist Leo Guida was an influential Italian painter and printmaker.
Beginning in 1969, Guida served as a teacher for nearly two decades at the Liceo Artistico in Latina. While he worked with watercolor paints to create much of his known art, he produced a wide range of graphic prints that is representative of his talents.
Guida worked with Chinese ink and was fluent in a variety of printmaking techniques, which included chalcography, engraving and aquatint. The latter is a technique named for its resemblance to watercolor or ink wash, while engraving is a method of making prints by incising lines into a metal plate with a sharp tool called a burin. Chalcography sees an artist engraving on copper or brass plates.
Guida made art in all kinds of styles over the course of his career. The bulk of his drawings and etchings are richly detailed and fantastical — they feature nudes, imagery from nature and depictions of mythological creatures. Guida’s works on paper show the influence of Spanish printmaker and painter Francisco Goya and are also inclusive of Surrealist flourishes and themes.

This powerful limited edition lithograph by William Steen was published in 1988 as part of the Art Against Aids portfolio, numbered 38/50.
Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Art Against AIDS Portfolio published in Houston, Texas. This will be the first time the work will be removed from the portfolio. The late 1980s was the height of the AIDS epidemic, and this was one of many efforts by the creative community to raise funds to assist in fighting this deadly scourge that disproportionately affected the artistic community.
William Steen 1949-2008
William Steen, artist, collector, curator, and mystic, died of pancreatic cancer on December 20 in New York, where he has lived since 2001. Long time framer at the Menil Collection, the soft-spoken Steen is remembered in Houston where he had his first exhibition of paintings in 1978 at the Roberto Molina Gallery. In 1984 Steen made his first of several trips to India, photographing thousands of Tibetan Buddhist ritual paintings. A champion of outsider art, in 2000 he tangled with the Houston Police over the grafitti mural he comissioned for the walls of the reclaimed Sterling Cleaners...
