First State: Drypoint Only. The child has fine shading over its whole face. Mother's head in profile, just slightly suggested. There is no indication of the pose of the figures.(Phila.)
Second state: Drypoint only. Mother's head completed. Her hand not finished, nor the ruffle at her left wrist. The child's right arm and hand also not finished. Two impressions.(Minn.)
Third State: Drypoint only, with aquatint in the trees & background. Printed in different colors of in with flesh tones, yellow hair for child and black hair for mother.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt (May 22, 1844 - June 14, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker. She lived much of her adult life in France, where she first befriended Edgar Degas and later exhibited among the Impressionists.
Cassatt (pronounced ca-SAHT) often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
Cassatt was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, which is now part of Pittsburgh. Cassatt grew up in an environment that viewed travel as integral to education; she spent five years in Europe and visited many of the capitals, including London, Paris, and Berlin. She had her first lessons in drawing and music while abroad and learned German and French. Her first exposure to French artists Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, and Courbet was likely at the Paris World's Fair of 1855. Also exhibited at the exhibition were Degas and Pissarro, both of whom would be future colleagues and mentors.

Mary Cassatt
As one of just two females and the only American member of the original French Impressionist circle, Mary Cassatt stands out for her ability to capture scenes of domestic life in her paintings that her male contemporaries often did not encounter.
Where other Impressionists indulged in sensual or sensational scenes of Parisian women, Cassatt’s unique perspective allowed her to create intimate, true-to-life renderings of her subjects. She pushed the radical art movement further to capture tender, fleeting instants shared by women as mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. Between 1860 and 1865, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and in December 1865, she sailed to Paris to study with the French painters Charles Chaplin and Jean-Léon Gérôme.
In 1868, Cassatt made her debut at the Paris Salon but returned to Philadelphia in 1870 with the onset of the Franco-Prussian war. However, by 1874 she had settled again in Paris, where she would live most of her adult life.
Just three years later, Cassatt met a man who would change the trajectory of her career forever: Edgar Degas. At his invitation, she joined a group that would become known as the Impressionists and, under his influence, developed a love for drawing and works on paper. Inspired by the "new painting," Cassatt abandoned her former academic manner and adopted Impressionism's high-keyed hues and modern subjects.
Best remembered for her intimate portrayals of women, children and the mother-child relationship, Cassatt was a vital contributor to the Impressionist circle. Today, her works can be found in important collections the world over, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington D.C.) and Musée d'Orsay (Paris).

This is an original drypoint and aquatint artwork by Jacques Villon. The artist signed in pencil on the lower right. As well as signed in plate at the top right of the image. This is a wonderful artwork of different intaglio processes being brought together in a beautiful almost seamless harmony. The thin pencil like markings and hair detailing are made using the Drypoint printmaking method. Whilst the color details around the girls are made using the Aquatint etching method. Jacques Villon shows his skills as a printmaker with the way these pieces line up perfectly and with how clean the rest of the plate is around the girls.

The oldest of three brothers who became major 20th-century artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp, he learnt engraving at the age of 16 from his maternal grandfather, Emile-Frédéric Nicolle (1830-94), a ship-broker who was also a much appreciated amateur artist. In January 1894, having completed his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, he was sent to study at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris, but within a year he was devoting most of his time to art, already contributing lithographs to Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Assiette au beurre. At this time he chose his pseudonym: Jack (subsequently Jacques) in homage to Alphonse Daudet’s novel Jack (1876) and Villon in appreciation of the 15th-century French poet François Villon...
