This framed hand colored stipple engraving and etching portrait of William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury under King Henry VII and his son King Henry VIII was created by Francesco Bartolozzi (1728–1815) after a drawing and a painting by Hans Holbein (1497-1543), who was Henry VIII's court painter. The print was published in London by John Chamberlaine in 1795. The print was created utilizing stipple engraving and etching techniques by the Italian artist Francesco Bartolozzi, who was employed as the royal engraver by King George III of England. The publisher, John Chamberlaine, was Keeper of the King's Drawings and Medals. The inscription beneath the portrait reads" "In His Majesty's Collection", "Engraved by F. Bartolozzi R A Historical Engraver to His Majesty'' in the lower right, and ''From an original drawing by Hans Holbien'' in the lower left. The original painting by Holbein is displayed at Lambeth Castle and the original drawing is in the art collection at Windsor Castle. The engraving is held by many museums, including: The British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, The Chicago Art Institute and The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
This portrait depicts Archbishop William Warham facing to his right, wearing a black cap covering his ears and fur trimmed clerical robes. The print is presented in a decorative gold-colored wood frame with a blue-grey fabric mat. The frame measures 26.5" x 20.13" x 1". The print is in excellent condition.
William Warham (1450-1532) was the last of the pre-Reformation archbishops of Canterbury, serving under King Henry VII and then under King Henry VIII. Antonio Canova is a beautiful black and white etching on paper, realized between 1770-1810 by the Italian old master, Giovanni Elia Morghen (1721-1789), after a painting by Pellegrini, as the inscriptions on plate report.

This original print represents Antonio Canova the Italian sculptor and painter, the greatest exponent of Neoclassicism in sculpture and for this reason called "the new Phidias", in the official portrait reserved to the great personalities. Realized with full mastery of the technique, this old master's print is in excellent condition, as good as new.

Giovanni Elia Morghen (Florence, 1721)
Giovanni Elia Morghen came from a family of engravers in Florence. According to the testimony of Raphael, the most illustrious member of the family, his grandfather was originally from Montpellier and, after marrying a Genoese woman, he moved to Florence, where he opened a lace shop. Both their sons, Giovanni Elia and Filippo, specialized in chalcographic art: Giovanni was predominantly a draftsman, whilst Filippo mastered the art of carving.
In Florence, Giovanni Elia Morghen was a pupil of Giovan Domenico Ferretti, and he probably also worked at the workshop of Carlo Bartolomeo Gregori. Indeed, he, with the other artists of the school, made 26 of the engravings present in the second Florentine edition (1766) of the Salon paintings at the palace of Florence. He then moved to Naples with his brother. From 1756, he began participating in the creation of the tables of the Antiquities of Herculaneum, a work of several volumes published in Naples with various interruptions in the late nineteenth century. This portrait of a nobleman in King Henry VIII's court entitled "N. Poines, Knight" is an etching and stipple engraving, printed in color on light pink-colored paper with hand-coloring in 1795. It is from "The Book of Imitations of Original Drawings by Hans Holbein in the Collection of His Majesty" by Francesco Bartollozzi (1728–1815), after a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/8 - 1543) in the 16th century. It was published in London by John Chamberlaine in 1797.
This is a bust length portrait of a noble man (Nicholas Poines (or Poins), who is facing to the left. He is bearded and is wearing a feathered cap and an ornate shirt. Bartolozzi's engraved portrait is after a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), the famous artist in the court of Henry VIII. The inscription below the image reads "In his Majesty's Collection". "Published as the Act directs April 6, 1795 by I. Chamberlaine". Below the image on the left it reads: "From the original drawing by Hans Holbein". Below the image on the right it reads: "Engraved by F Bartolozzi RA Historical Engraver to His Majesty".
The engraving is presented in an ornate beaded black frame with a gold inner trim and a light peach-colored mat. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. The frame measures "22.25 high, 17" wide and 1.25" deep. There are a few tiny spots, but the print is otherwise in excellent condition. There is a small ding in the the upper right. The original text from the 18th century publication is included in a sleeve on the back of the frame.
There are three additional framed Bartolozzi engraved portraits from Holbein drawings that are available on 1stdibs. They are framed and matted identically to this one, other than some differences in frame size. These include portraits of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's son Edward, who succeeded Henry as King and himself was succeeded by Queen Elizabeth I, and M. Souch.
