About the Artist: Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997) was an artist known for his paintings and prints which referenced commercial art and popular culture icons like Mickey Mouse. Composed using Ben-Day dots—the method used by newspapers and comic strips to denote gradients and texture—Lichtenstein’s work mimicked the mechanical technique with his own hand on a much larger scale. He was a leading figure in establishing the Pop Art movement, along with Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. “I take a cliché and try to organize its forms to make it monumental. The difference is often not great, but it is crucial,” he once said of his work. Born on October 27, 1923 in New York, NY, he studied painting under Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League of New York after graduating from high school. Drafted by the US Army during World War II, while stationed in France, he notably encountered the works of European masters and contemporary artists. After the war, he returned to America and completed his degree at Ohio State University, producing paintings in the vein of Abstract Expressionism. Lichtenstein began teaching art at Rutgers University during the late 1950s, meeting fellow faculty members involved in the New York art scene, including the performance artist Allan Kaprow. By the early 1960s, he had begun showing with Leo Castelli gallery in New York, and made major breakthroughs with works such as Drowning Girl (1963), a satirical take on melodramatic pulp fiction of the era. Themes of irony and cliché prevailed throughout the remainder of Lichtenstein’s career, as evinced in his Haystacks (1969), a take on the canonical series by Claude Monet. The artist died of pneumonia on September 29, 1997 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Modern in London.

Screen print on waxed paper plate. Unsigned from an unknown edition. Published by Bert Stern, New York. Plate size 10 x 10 inches. Frame size approx 17 x 17 inches. Stamped "Roy Lichtenstein On First Inc, 1969" on plate verso. Excellent condition. All reasonable offers will be considered. Lichtenstein made the paper plate for the well-known fashion and advertising photographer Bert Stern, who had set up an uber-chic New York boutique called “On First Store”. Located in Manhattan, Stern’s idea was to commission stylish yet affordable objects for the home and wardrobe from notable fashion designers and artists. Unfortunately, the shop did not last long and most of the plates were left undistributed. Screenprint and collage with embossing, 1976, on Rives BFK paper, signed and dated in pencil, 'APVII' one of nine artist’s proof, aside from the standard edition of 16, printed and published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., New York with their blindstamp, 74 x 114 cm. (29¼ x 45 in.) Corlett 140 ‘The architectural elements in the Entablature series can be seen as providing the artist with ready-made designs, in much the same way as comic strips and advertisements had provided him with easily recognised motifs in his earlier work.’ (Christoph Grunenberg, July 2000, Tate) Between 1971 and 1976, Lichtenstein produced two series of entablature paintings based on photographs he had taken in New York of 20th century architectural ornaments in Lower Manhattan and, specifically, in the vicinity of Wall Street and 28th Street. During this period, in May 1974, he began to also discuss the creation of the ‘Entablature’ print series with Master Printmaker, Ken Tyler...
