It was originally designed to illustrate the step by step mezzotint process in the Abrams publication: "The Mezzotint: History and Technique" authored by Carol Wax. Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer Sylvan Cole to exhibit at Associated American Artists Gallery, launching her career as a professional artist/printmaker. With the publication of her book, The Mezzotint: History and Technique, published by Abrams, 1990 and 1996, Carol added author and teacher to her credits. In the ensuing years she has expanded her repertoire of mediums beyond printmaking into other works on paper and painting.

Kiki Smith (1954 - ) is a West German-born American artist. Her work encompasses many themes: sex, birth, regeneration and death along with personal investigation of her life and those of her family. Her figurative work of the late 1980s and early 1990s confronted subjects such as AIDS and gender. Her recent works have depicted the human condition in relationship to nature. Smith lives and works in New York City and the Hudson Valley, New York State.
Her father was sculpture artist, Tony Smith and her mother was actress and opera singer Jane Lawrence. Although Kiki's work takes a very different form than that of her parents, early exposure to her father's process of making geometric sculptures allowed her to experience formal craftsmanship firsthand.
Smith was enrolled at Hartford Art School in Connecticut for eighteen months from 1974 to 1975, then moved to New York City in 1976 and joined Collaborative Projects (Colab), an artist collective. The influence of this radical group's use of unconventional materials can be in seen in her work. For a short time in 1984, she studied to be an emergency medical technician and sculpted body parts, and by 1990, she began to craft human figures.
In addition to print making Kiki Smith has created in a number of different mediums such as film, sculpture, tapestries, books and the confines of commissions.
She experimented in a wide range of printmaking processes. Some of her earliest print works were screen-printed dresses, scarves and shirts, often with images of body parts. In association with Colab, Smith printed an array of posters in the early 1980s containing political statements or announcing Colab events. In 1988 she created "All Souls”, a fifteen-foot screen-print work featuring repetitive images of a fetus, an image Smith found in a Japanese anatomy book...

This fine lithograph is by Beniamino Bufano (1889-1970), a well-known artist in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Museo Italo-Americano has this work in their permanent collection and indicates that it was pulled in 1970 at he Bank Street Atelier in New York in 1970. The print is in very good condition. The frame is in good condition with some light scratches.
Beniamino Benvenuto Bufano was born in San-Fele, Italy on Oct. 14, 1889. At age three Bufano's family brought him to NYC where he spent his childhood and was educated by private tutors. He studied at the ASL in NYC from 1913-15, the pupil of James L. Fraser, Herbert Adams, and Paul Manship. He came to San Francisco in 1915 to work on a sculpture for the PPIE. For awhile he worked in the studio of coppersmith Dirk van Erp. He then traveled extensively for four years in France, Italy, India, and China. After returning to San Francisco in 1921, he remained there the rest of his life except for visits to the Orient and Europe. Always a radical, he lost his teaching position at San Francisco Institute of Art in 1923 because he was too modern for the conservative faculty. He later taught at UC Berkeley and the CCAC (1964-65). Henry Miller wrote of him, "He will outlive our civilization and probably be better known, better understood, both as a man and artist, five thousand years hence." His work, simple in style and monumental in scale, includes smoothly rounded animals in granite and icons sheathed in stainless steel. Only five feet tall, Bufano was a controversial, free spirit until his death in San Francisco on Aug. 16, 1970. Member: SFAA; NSS; American Artists Congress. About the Artist:
Kenneth Miller Adams, born in Kansas in 1897, began his art career in Topeka in 1913, studying under artist G.M. Stone. He later continued his education at the Art Institute of Chicago before serving in World War I. After his service, Adams studied at the Art Students League in New York City and then traveled abroad to immerse himself in Italian and French art.
In 1924, Adams returned to Kansas, where his friend Andrew Dasburg encouraged him to move to Taos, New Mexico. There, Adams became the youngest and final member of the Taos Society...

The etching is signed by Reed in the lower right margin and numbered 11 of a limited edition of 30 in the lower left margin. About the Artist:
Doel Reed’s dedication to printmaking and his unique approach to aquatint solidified his reputation as a master of the medium. Early in his career, Reed became fascinated with Goya's aquatints, which inspired him to teach himself the technique and establish a lifelong passion for creating etched works. Known for his emotionally charged landscapes marked by dramatic tonal contrasts, Reed’s prints evoke a sense of mystery, blending modernist forms with a romantic, moody atmosphere.
Born in Indiana and initially studying architecture, Reed’s understanding of structure deeply influenced his artistic style, which he described as architectonic. He later transitioned to fine arts, studying at the Cincinnati Art Academy, but his studies were interrupted by World War I. A gas attack during the war temporarily blinded him, and the lasting effects of the attack led him to seek the dry climates of Oklahoma and New Mexico for relief.
