Singer Needle
Located in New Orleans, LA
Carol Wax's "Singer Needle" is a mezzotint issued in an edition of 100. It was originally designed to illustrate the step by step mezzotint process in the Abrams publication: "The Mezzotint: History and Technique" authored by Carol Wax. It is FIROS #44 in the catalogue raisonne. This impression is #98 out of 100 Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer Sylvan Cole to exhibit at Associated American Artists Gallery, launching her career as a professional artist/printmaker. With the publication of her book, The Mezzotint: History and Technique, published by Abrams, 1990 and 1996, Carol added author and teacher to her credits. In the ensuing years she has expanded her repertoire of mediums beyond printmaking into other works on paper and painting. In compositions reflecting an appreciation for antiquated machinery and vintage textiles, Wax creates imagery that, in her own words, “… speaks to an inner life perceived in inanimate objects.” She uses stylization and imagination to reinvent subjects, transforming an ordinary typewriter into a monumental icon...

Survivor
Located in New Orleans, LA
Caroline Durieux's "Survivor" is a pencil-signed lithograph created in 1947 in an edition of 20. It is illustrated in Carl Zigrosser's book on the artist published in 1949. Durieux on Survivor "An extra-terrestrial spotlight falls on this battered subhuman figure; he does not look directly into the light but away from it, raising his hand to it like a beggar. The worn pads on his hands and knees shows that he has walked on them, like an animal, for a long time. There is nothing to suggest that he can stand. The beam of light looks cold, machine like, impersonal. Scornful satire marks the limit of comedy for '. . . there is nothing funny about scorn which comes round again almost to the attitude of divine comedy.' Caroline Durieux (American, 1896 – 1989) Printmaker, painter, satirist, innovator, social activist, Caroline Durieux was born in New Orleans and was already making sketches by the age of four. Her formal art training was at Newcomb College (1912-1917) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1918-1920). Carl Zigrosser of the Philadelphia Museum of Art encouraged Durieux to try lithography. While living in Mexico, she learned lithography from Emilio Amero...

Kiki Smith "Noon 2007" Engraving Portrait Musician Ryan Bingham
Located in Detroit, MI
" Noon 2007" Portrait of Musician Ryan Bingham engraving by Kiki Smith of a young man looking directly at the viewer. His look is not one of challenge, but more of a questioning nature. It is numbered on verso 28/33, and dated 2007. Kiki Smith (1954 - ) is a West German-born American artist. Her work encompasses many themes: sex, birth, regeneration and death along with personal investigation of her life and those of her family. Her figurative work of the late 1980s and early 1990s confronted subjects such as AIDS and gender. Her recent works have depicted the human condition in relationship to nature. Smith lives and works in New York City and the Hudson Valley, New York State. Her father was sculpture artist, Tony Smith and her mother was actress and opera singer Jane Lawrence. Although Kiki's work takes a very different form than that of her parents, early exposure to her father's process of making geometric sculptures allowed her to experience formal craftsmanship firsthand. Smith was enrolled at Hartford Art School in Connecticut for eighteen months from 1974 to 1975, then moved to New York City in 1976 and joined Collaborative Projects (Colab), an artist collective. The influence of this radical group's use of unconventional materials can be in seen in her work. For a short time in 1984, she studied to be an emergency medical technician and sculpted body parts, and by 1990, she began to craft human figures. In addition to print making Kiki Smith has created in a number of different mediums such as film, sculpture, tapestries, books and the confines of commissions. She experimented in a wide range of printmaking processes. Some of her earliest print works were screen-printed dresses, scarves and shirts, often with images of body parts. In association with Colab, Smith printed an array of posters in the early 1980s containing political statements or announcing Colab events. In 1988 she created "All Souls”, a fifteen-foot screen-print work featuring repetitive images of a fetus, an image Smith found in a Japanese anatomy book...

Laura
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Beniamino Bufano (1889-1970) Title: Laura Year: 1970 Medium: Lithograph Image size: 18 x 12.25 inches Sight size: 19.5 x 13.5 inches. Framed size: 27 x 21 inches Signature: Signed, lower right Edition: 125. This one: 83/125 Condition: Very good Frame: Framed in black lacquer frame, black mat. Frame in good condition. This fine lithograph is by Beniamino Bufano (1889-1970), a well-known artist in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Museo Italo-Americano has this work in their permanent collection and indicates that it was pulled in 1970 at he Bank Street Atelier in New York in 1970. The print is in very good condition. The frame is in good condition with some light scratches. Beniamino Benvenuto Bufano was born in San-Fele, Italy on Oct. 14, 1889. At age three Bufano's family brought him to NYC where he spent his childhood and was educated by private tutors. He studied at the ASL in NYC from 1913-15, the pupil of James L. Fraser, Herbert Adams, and Paul Manship. He came to San Francisco in 1915 to work on a sculpture for the PPIE. For awhile he worked in the studio of coppersmith Dirk van Erp. He then traveled extensively for four years in France, Italy, India, and China. After returning to San Francisco in 1921, he remained there the rest of his life except for visits to the Orient and Europe. Always a radical, he lost his teaching position at San Francisco Institute of Art in 1923 because he was too modern for the conservative faculty. He later taught at UC Berkeley and the CCAC (1964-65). Henry Miller wrote of him, "He will outlive our civilization and probably be better known, better understood, both as a man and artist, five thousand years hence." His work, simple in style and monumental in scale, includes smoothly rounded animals in granite and icons sheathed in stainless steel. Only five feet tall, Bufano was a controversial, free spirit until his death in San Francisco on Aug. 16, 1970. Member: SFAA; NSS; American Artists Congress. Nude with Winter Bouquet 11/30 is a vintage aquatint etching by American printmaker Doel Reed (1894-1985), created in 1972. This exquisite work depicts a reclining female figure, elegantly posed alongside a vase of flowers and flowing drapery, capturing the quiet intimacy of the scene. The print is presented in a custom frame with archival materials, with outer dimensions of 20 ½ x 26 ¼ x 1 inches and an image size of 11 ¾ x 17 ¾ inches. This stunning piece is illustrated in Doel Reed: The Graphic Works by Harry B. Cohen and Ann L. Rogers (page 83, plate 124), showcasing Reed's mastery in the aquatint technique. The etching is part of several esteemed collections, including the University of Wyoming, Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University. It has also been exhibited in notable shows, including the 147th National Academy of Design in New York, Indiana Printmakers in 1972, the 32nd Annual Print Show at the Philbrook Museum in 1972, and the 53rd Annual Exhibition of the Society of American Graphic Artists in New York in 1975. Early in his career, Reed became fascinated with Goya's aquatints, which inspired him to teach himself the technique and establish a lifelong passion for creating etched works. Known for his emotionally charged landscapes marked by dramatic tonal contrasts, Reed’s prints evoke a sense of mystery, blending modernist forms with a romantic, moody atmosphere. Born in Indiana and initially studying architecture, Reed’s understanding of structure deeply influenced his artistic style, which he described as architectonic. He later transitioned to fine arts, studying at the Cincinnati Art Academy, but his studies were interrupted by World War I. A gas attack during the war temporarily blinded him, and the lasting effects of the attack led him to seek the dry climates of Oklahoma and New Mexico for relief. After the war, Reed discovered Goya’s aquatints...
