Marie Joseph Georges Goursat, better known as SEM, was a versatile French illustrator, affichiste, and caricaturist born on November 22, 1863, in Périgueux, and passing away on November 24, 1934, in Paris. SEM, who adopted his pseudonym in homage to the caricaturist Cham, was a pioneering artist of the Belle Époque era.
In 1906, SEM directed his satirical gaze toward the influential American financier J.P. Morgan in a caricatural poster. J.P. Morgan, a prominent figure in the finance world, was scrutinized through SEM's unique lens, showcasing the artist's wit, humor, and keen observational skills. This artwork became a visual commentary on the societal and economic milieu of the time.
SEM's distinctive style featured solid color areas outlined in black, vibrant backgrounds, and central characters in the foreground, creating a visually striking and highly readable aesthetic. Furniture brand SEM started as a spin-off from Milanese brand Spotti and now has an exceptional reputation of its own. Working with acclaimed furniture designers, including Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi, Vormen and Elisa Ossino, SEM creates personalized and finely crafted solutions for modern living.
During the 1950s, large furniture manufacturers often had difficulty providing customized, high-quality furniture while producing other products on a mass scale. SEM originated from that demand and has evolved to complement Spotti and offer simple, functional and highly ergonomic furniture for both work and home environments.
SEM, which stands for Spotti Edizioni Milano, has attracted a wide range of talent to design its furniture collections. Pivot, named for a hingeless door mechanism in its cupboards, is a design by Giacomo Moor, named as Elle Decor Italia’s Best Young Designer of 2016. Futuraforma, designed by architecture and interior design team Marcante-Testa, is a sophisticated collection featuring the Duale table, the Genio chandelier and the Magico carpet.
Italian architect Hannes Peer lent his expertise to the Paesaggio collection, which features notable designs like the Nuvola armchair, the Alea dining chair, the Petali table lamp and the Butterfly table. Peer’s Butterfly console tables and other tables are a meeting between architecture, design and engineering to produce a complex and organic form that catches the eye.
SEM displayed collections at Milan Design Week in 2018 and 2019 and with AD France’s AD Intérieurs in 2019. SEM also expanded the Paesaggio collection during the 2021 FuoriSalone, Alcova, in Milan.

Hans Haacke (born in 1936 in Cologne, GER, has lived in New York, USA, since 1965) focused on "a single problem area: how the country deals with its history and national identity. More than I care for, these questions stir up emotions both in Austria and Germany." Haacke had been originally concerned with physical and biological systems. Very early on, his artistic practice also included the analysis of and reflection on socio-political phenomena. Haacke's work deals with social and political themes. He considers the debates arising from his works - fierce at times - to be an integral part of them.

After his arrival from Columbus, Ohio in 1904, Bellows lived at the West Side YMCA. It was there that he met Eugene Speicher, another aspiring young artist who was to become his lifelong friend. Always interested in the anatomy of the human body, Bellows often satirized the various types who, while leading a sedentary life, feel compelled to devote a portion of their daily routine to physical self-improvement.
Throughout his brief but illustrious career, George Wesley Bellows created striking scenes that documented ordinary American life in all its beauty and banality. Considered an American Realist, the artist eschewed embellishment, finding inspiration in the gritty boroughs of New York City, the rocky coastline of Maine, and, later, in his friends and family. Bellows garnered early recognition for his arresting portrayals of illegal prizefighting, dramatic works executed in dark tonal palettes that underscore the brutality of the violent sport.
Bellows’ elderly Methodist parents hoped their son might pursue the ministry, a calling the extroverted athlete never received. The Columbus native competed on the baseball team at Ohio State University and also served as an illustrator for the college yearbook. In the fall of 1904—just months shy of his expected graduation—Bellows defied his father’s wishes and boarded a train to New York City in hopes of becoming a magazine illustrator like his idols Howard Chandler Christy and Charles Dana Gibson.
