About the Item

Roy Lichtenstein Apple and Lemon, 1983 is an excellent example of the artist’s later work. Lichtenstein largely abandoned his famous comic strip panel artwork for more abstracted works. This work features gestural loose brushstrokes suggesting a form of a red apple and yellow lemon. A far cry from Lichtenstein’s manufactural and precise comic strip works, this woodcut print shows the viewer more of Lichtenstein’s artistic hand and his experimentation with abstraction. The brushstrokes show the artist’s painterly hand and give the work a dynamic movement. Albeit simple in design and color choice, the print is striking and shows Lichtenstein’s skill in balancing a composition, and his interpretation of an abstracted still life. Created in 1983, Roy Lichtenstein Apple and Lemon, 1983 is a woodcut on handmade Iwano Kizuki Hosho paper. This work is hand-signed by Roy Lichtenstein and dated and numbered from the edition of 60 in pencil in the lower right image. Composition sur fond jaune
By Fernand Léger
Located in Palo Alto, CA
utting a new spin on one of his favorite subjects, Léger here depicts tree trunks and logs as objects in space rather than related to the ground. The gnarled branches form an abstract still-life composition, twisting and turning in unanticipated directions. The earthy browns, greens, and yellows contrast with the bold black outlines. The logs appear as though arranged on a platter, presented to the viewer for contemplation. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the tiny box...

Guifà e la Beretta Rossa, (Guifà and the Red Cap)
By Frank Stella
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Frank Stella’s Guifà e la Beretta Rossa, (Guifà and the Red Cap), 1989, is a captivating etching made of bold colors and large-scale geometric forms. This artwork was made in collaboration with well-known print maker Kenneth Tyler. In the upper left of the image, rainbow hues of violet, blue, green and yellow decorate the paper. These colors contrast beautifully against the bold, inky strokes which color the background. Additionally, columns, pillars and cones are layered on top of one another as if in a collage. The shapes vary from perfect circles to abstract forms. Viewed in combination, the imagery dances before the viewer, inviting the imagination to construct its own interpretations. This series of mechanical shapes and 3-D composition are reminiscent of Stella’s relief paintings from the early 1980s. For an artist like Stella, experimenting with color, form and dimension is key. He proves to viewers he cannot be confined to a specific artistic genre or movement. Therefore, Stella's abstract works retain a timelessness which will transcend expectations of abstract art. Above all, this large-scale work is an exceptional example of Stella’s later period and his iconic artistic style. The artist is a master of both painting and print. Oftentimes, Stella’s prints...
