About the Item

This collaborative was done at the studio called "On First Studios" (meant First Avenue downtown, N.Y.C.); but the collaboration was dissolved after a small run was produced. Originally sold in bundles of 10, the number of plates that were produced, or still remain is unknown. One of the screen prints is in the MOMA's permanent collection; REFERENCE: III. 45, The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonne, 1948-1997, 2002, Corlett & Fine, New York, p. 314.; Published by Bert Stern, N.Y. 1969. Stamped with Artist's name and year on verso. Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) mined advertisements and comics to make groundbreaking paintings that brought American pop culture into the gallery space. He undermined the distinction between painting and printing as he made canvases that looked as though they’d come from a commercial press; using paint and stencils, he meticulously rendered flat, single-color benday dots by hand. Lichtenstein introduced his detached and deadpan style in 1961 when he painted Look Mickey, a picture of the cartoon mouse executed in primary colors. Five years later, he represented the United States at the Venice Biennale. By the 1970s, he’d already enjoyed major shows at the Pasadena Art Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Guggenheim. Lichtenstein’s work has sold for more than $90 million at auction. His use of appropriated imagery has influenced artists such as Richard Prince, Jeff Koons, and Raymond Pettibon.

Stamped "Roy Lichtenstein On First Inc, 1969" on plate verso. Excellent condition. All reasonable offers will be considered. Unfortunately, the shop did not last long and most of the plates were left undistributed. About the Artist: Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997) was an artist known for his paintings and prints which referenced commercial art and popular culture icons like Mickey Mouse. Composed using Ben...
