About the Item

Created in 1989, this acrylic and silkscreen sculpture is hand-signed by Victor Vasarely (Pécs, 1906 – Paris, 1997) in black ink in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 75 in black ink in the lower left. Victor Vasarely Holld (Moiré Tower), 1989 wonderfully combines optics, form and reflection to create an eye catching piece. Composed of transparent Plexiglas, this triangular tower is truly multi-faceted. Parallel wavy black lines along each of the 3 faces communicate a sense of motion in Vasarely’s trademark style while also providing for an element of interaction. The image constantly morphs as we move around this tower. The transparency of the Plexiglas allows for the images upon each face to play off of each other so that, as we change our vantage point, the image is constantly shifting, allowing for multiple images to exist within this one captivating work. Discussing his thoughts on abstraction, Vasarely stated, “The celebrated transition from representational to nonrepresentational art is only one of the stages in profound transformation taking place in the plastic arts. The term 'abstract' in painting refers not to an established fact, but to an irresistible trend toward plastic creation different from the kind we already know.” (Vasarely 1978, 13).
