About the Item

Portrait of Albert Dubarry by Léon-Ernest DRIVIER (1878-1951) Bronze with a nuanced greenish dark brown patina signed "Drivier" cast by "Montagutelli, Paris, cire perdue" (with the foundry stamp) France circa 1930 height 58 cm Commentary : Albert Dubarry (1925-1928) was a politically engaged man. Coming to Paris at the end of the 1880s, he politically hardened through the struggle with Republicans. In 1895, close to the leader of Republicans in Corsica, he participated in several election campaigns as editor of the Journal of Corsica. Dubarry occupied various positions in the colonial administration between 1903 and 1916, then became involved in politics, becoming mayor of Beaulieu-sur-Mer in 1915, and candidate for deputation in the Department of Eure in 1928. But it was by running newspapers that Dubarry had the most audience and success. He founded in 1902, "Le Radical de l’Allier", in 1917 newspapers about the world of the spectacle and the theater ("Le Carnet de la semaine", "La Rampe"), in 1919 "l’Ere nouvelle" and especially in November 1925 "La Volonté", a Parisian luxury daily that he run until 1934. Biography : Léon-Ernest Drivier (1878-1951) was a French sculptor and illustrator. Born from a glove artisan father in Grenoble, Drivier joined the School of Fine Arts, then worked from 1907 in the studio of Auguste Rodin. He was the friend of sculptors Auguste de Niederhausern, Gaston Schnegg, Jane Poupelet and Antoine Bourdelle. In 1918, he made the official bust of "France victorious". His first era was akin to neo-Romanticism, then he approached the neoclassicism of Charles Despiau. Many orders were required in the 20s and 30s, including a gilded bronze statue of ten meters high, representing the warrior Athena or "France bringing peace and prosperity to the colonies" or the sculptures representing "The Joy of Living" in the gardens of Trocadero, made for the Universal Exhibition of 1937. Drivier was elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1943. Many works were now preserved in the world's greatest museums, such as the Georges Pompidou National Center for Modern Art in the city of Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Despiau-Wlerick Museum in Mont-de-Provence -Marsan, the Museum of the 30's in Boulogne-Billancourt, the Museum of Fine Arts in Cambrai, the Chartreuse Museum in Douai, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg, or the Museums of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires -Aires and Algiers.
