About the Item
Extraordinary that a few women prevailed in the difficult world of casting in bronze in America but Lillie was one of them. There is scant information on her but this marvelous head is a testament to her academic prowess and ability to capture the character of her sitter. A classic head done at a time in life when the face is characterized by age and integrity. Busts like these placed into an interior on a table or mantle give a grace and gravitas that is delightful and enriching to live with.

A crafts person and sculptor, Lillie Harper's specialty was pottery. She studied in New York City at Inwood Pottery, Grand Central Art School and Art Students League, and in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Memberships were New York Society of Craftsmen and National Art Club. Exhibition venues included Catherine Lorrillard Wolfe Art Club, New York, 1930; Salons of America, 1934 and 1936; and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1936.
