About the Item

PABLO PICASSO Vase à deux anses (A.R. 213), 1953 Ed. 400 pcs White earthenware, engobe decoration, engraved with a knife under partial glaze with a brush H. 39 cm I H. 15 3/8 in Inscribed and stamped underside : Edition Picasso, Madoura Plein Feu, Edition Picasso Picasso : Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947-1971, by Alain Ramié, Editions Madoura, Vallauris, 1988, illustrated under no.213, p.115. Visage à deux anses is a remarkable sculptural ceramic in which Pablo Picasso explores the fusion between utilitarian form and stylized human figure. This piece asserts itself as a true sculpture, with its twisted handles evoking stylized arms, its torso adorned with graphic motifs, and its frontal, almost hieratic face crowning the whole like a totem. The overall effect curiously recalls a chess piece— perhaps a queen —through its solemn verticality, balanced symmetry, and bold black-and-white contrasts. As with a chess figure, every detail here is both decorative and symbolic, contributing to the visual strength of the object. In this work, Picasso reimagines the traditional vase as an anthropomorphic figure, both archaic and resolutely modern. The graphic interplay of black and white, the stylization of feminine forms, and the frontal presentation of the face reflect his broader artistic explorations in painting, drawing, and sculpture—here translated into ceramic form. This ceramic piece perfectly embodies Picasso’s inventive and iconoclastic approach, as he redefined the art object by imbuing ceramics with a sculptural, symbolic, and almost mythological dimension.

Pablo Picasso Visage d’homme (Man’s Head), 1968-1969 A.R. 570 showcases the artist’s unrivaled ability to illustrate human nuance. Each aspect of the man’s face, from his furrowed brow to his side gaze is carefully illustrated. The crowding of horizontal lines on his brow and vertical lines on his nose bring a sense of tension to his face, which compounds the furrowed brow. There are only two colors on the plaque, black and red, but the semi circle of hair atop the mans head...
