Pablo Picasso
Visage d’homme (Man’s Head), 1968-1969 A.R. 570

1968-1969

About the Item

Pablo Picasso Visage d’homme (Man’s Head), 1968-1969 A.R. 570 showcases the artist’s unrivaled ability to illustrate human nuance. Each aspect of the man’s face, from his furrowed brow to his side gaze is carefully illustrated. The crowding of horizontal lines on his brow and vertical lines on his nose bring a sense of tension to his face, which compounds the furrowed brow. There are only two colors on the plaque, black and red, but the semi circle of hair atop the mans head and the light beard that he is growing are still apparent. Most of the detail comes in the center of the face, creating a wealth of red color that draws the eye in and away from the black outer edges of the tile. The contrast of the red earthenware against a smooth black surface is exquisite. The impressive size of the plaque adds a sense of drama to the scene. Picasso plays with texture and color to delight the senses. Because of the way the plaque has been made, there is a real depth to the face of the man, and the smooth indents create some delicate shadows that add to the complexity of Picasso ceramic Visage d'homme (Man's Head), 1968-1969 A.R. 570. Paseo, from Service Scènes de Corrida, A.R. 416
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 is numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse. Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: Pablo Picasso Paseo...
