Richard MacDonald
Showtime Atelier, Red

2017

About the Item

“A silent medium within a silent medium.” These are the words contemporary master Richard MacDonald uses in describing his world renowned Mime Series. MacDonald’s trademark skill at investing his evocative bronze images with movement and life is never more evident than in his innovative and eloquent mimes. Sometimes enigmatic and most assuredly metaphoric, MacDonald’s engaging performers invite the audience to be its own storyteller. Continuing in the spirit of his classical mimes, Richard MacDonald’s masterwork entitled “Showtime” offers us an experience with whim, movement, and joy. We feel the weight of the mime as he sits on his imaginary stool and we sense his readiness to apply the next stroke of color to his lips. Signed by the artist. The sculpture comes on a black granite base. In 2014 and 2015, Richard MacDonald focused intently on the minerals and pigments of his patina process - specifically on the color red. Shortly thereafter, the artist revealed his discoveries in a new exhibition entitled “Richard MacDonald: Red.” The exhibition, which highlights MacDonald's creative immersion into the hue, the emotion, and narrative of color, represents a profound new direction in the artist's work.
