About the Item

Jenny HOLZER (b. 1950) Untitled from the series THE LIVING SERIES, 1981 Bronze plaque. This work is the artist proof number 2 from an edition of 3 plus 2 artist’s proofs. 10 x 45.5 cm - 4 x 18 in Provenance : - Galerie Barbara Gladstone, New York - Christie's, New York, November 17, 1988, lot 277 - Private collection - Digard Auction, Paris, November 25, 2024, lot 33 The present artwork, a bronze plaque by Jenny Holzer, exemplifies her distinctive use of language as both message and medium. Known for her text-based conceptual practice, Holzer presents a statement that is clinical in tone yet rich with sensory and psychological implications. By calling attention to a bodily threshold—the mouth—she highlights the subtle tension between interior and exterior, control and vulnerability. This piece forms part of Holzer’s Living series (1980–1982), a body of work composed of prose-like texts that explore daily routines, bodily awareness, and social dynamics through a lens that is at once detached and intimate. Unlike the more overtly political tone of some of her other series, the Living texts often evoke private, corporeal experiences with unsettling clarity. The permanence of the bronze contrasts with the ephemeral nature of speech and the intimacy of the subject matter, encouraging viewers to reflect on the power of language and the physicality it can evoke. This work is a compelling example of Holzer’s ability to transform simple observations into enduring and quietly provocative art.

Half Dead, "Inflammatory Essay" (from Documenta 1982)
By Jenny Holzer
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Jenny Holzer is one of the most important and original artists of the 20th century. Her body of work, with its emphasis on text, is provocative and occasionally frightening, manipulating the language of folk wisdom, pop culture, and government slogan to produce a commentary on global issues including power structures, gender struggle, economics, voting, and warfare. Holzer's iconic "Inflammatory Essays", produced between 1979 and 1982, were first pasted on walls throughout heavily populated metro areas including New York, and shortly after in other cities. Unsigned and commercially produced, they subverted the conventions of advertising, graffiti, and public art. Each essay was in a different eye-catching color to maximize viewers' attention. It was also helpful when one Essay replaced an older one. The texts were derived from her childhood interest in rapturous writings. Holzer tried to emulate a similar style for her essays, yet borrowed from political theorists (notably Mao, Lenin, and Emma Goldman...
