Girardon’s Equestrian Portrait of Louis XIV

King Louis XIV, one of France's greatest monarchs, sits confidently astride a prancing steed in this bronze equestrian statue. The extraordinary work is a reduction of the portrait of the Sun King by François Girardon, one of the most noted and influential sculptors of the period. Looking back to the great masterpieces of antiquity, Girardon took his inspiration from the seminal ancient Roman marble of Marcus Aurelius, now in the Musei Capitoline (Rome). Louis XIV is thus portrayed here as a conquering Roman hero, his costume adorned with many neoclassical motifs, hand outstretched in a gesture of command. The result is an imposing royal portrait of power and absolute authority that pays homage to one of the most important sovereigns in French history.
It was in 1685, at the very height of his rule, when Louis XIV commissioned the monumental bronze of himself from the great Girardon. Notes: Puech conceived the idea for ‘La Sirene’ during his stay at the Villa Medici when he fell passionately in love with the celebrated opera singer Emma Calvé, who was then performing in Rome. Peuch wrote, "it is to her that I owe the inspiration for the group." The sculpture shows a winged chimeric siren with a tail of a fish abducting a Ephebus. Puech noted the rarity of the scene of a woman abducting a man, rather than the more common depiction of a man carrying away a female victim. Peuch says, “I had the presentiment that, with the Siren's rape of the Ephebus, I could express the force of passion, which reached towards the unknown, which, itself, might be fidelity or the fall..." In Greek mythology the sirens seduced sailors with their singing only to lead them to their death in the sea.

Henri Désiré Gauquié was born in Flers-lez-Lille on 22 October 1858. He initially studied art at the Academy of Valenciennes under René Fache. After competing in Lille, he obtained a scholarship to study at the Paris School of Fine Art at the studio of Jules Cavelier. He started exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1881. In 1886, he won a third class medal and a travel grant from the Ministry of Public Instruction and Fine Arts for his group ‘Perseus, Vanquisher of Medusa’. This was later purchased by the State for the museum of Agen. After spending time in Italy and Belgium, Gauquié returned to France. He went on to win several other medals at the Salon including second prize in 1890 for his sculpture of Brennus and first prize in 1895 for his marble group Bacchante and Satyr , now owned by the city of Tourcoing. He also won a bronze medal at the L’Exposition Universelle in 1889, and a silver medal in 1900. In the same year he was appointed knight of the Legion of Honour and promoted to the rank of Officer of the Order of Academic Palms.
He produced several public monuments in collaboration with the architect Henri Guillaume dedicated to public figures such as Alexandre Le Grand...
