Indira Cesarine is a multidisciplinary artist who works with photography, video, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. A graduate of Columbia University with a triple major in Art History, French, and Women’s Studies, she additionally studied at Parson’s School of Design, ICP, SVA, The New York Film Academy, and The New York Academy of Art. Cesarine had her first solo show at the age of sixteen at Paul Mellon Arts Center. She began working as a photographer from the age of seventeen, shooting for top modeling agencies Elite, Ford, and IMG while she completed her degree. Upon graduation from university, she continued her career in London where she received photography commissions by Vogue, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, and many other international titles while still in her early twenties. Her work as an artist has been featured internationally at many art galleries, museums, and art fairs, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hudson Valley MOCA, The Watermill Center, Mattatuck Museum, Albany Institute, The National Museum of Women In The Arts, CICA Museum, Smack Mellon, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, French Embassy Cultural Center, Art Basel Miami, SCOPE Art Fair, Cannes Film Festival, and SPRING/BREAK Art Show to name a few.
In 2014, her public art sculpture, "The Egg of Light," was exhibited at Rockefeller Center as part of the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt. Cesarine’s work has been auctioned in a number of celebrated art benefits including at Sotheby’s New York, ARTWALK NY supporting the Coalition for the Homeless, Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research, and UPRISE supporting the ERA Coalition, among many others. Her artwork and exhibitions have been featured internationally in numerous publications including The New York Times, American Vogue, Vogue Italia, Forbes, Newsweek, W Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, i-D, Dazed, New York Magazine, and The Huffington Post. Black Tulips and Vase, April 5, 2014, represents Sultan's still-life, where the shape of the object is reduced to the bare essentials. The image reveals one of the key features of Sultan’s work - the material juxtaposition- the contrast of a weighty background with ethereal shapes of the flowers. The sculpture is made from painted aluminum on a polished aluminum base. The ephemeral shape of the flowers is gracefully combined with the weighty aluminum manifesting the synthesis of the natural and the industrial typical to Sultan´s work. The sculpture is incised with title, date, and artist initials, it is as well stamped with the edition number, publisher, and artist copyright stamp on the base verso.

Joan’s latest sculpture series of female figures brings an out-of-the-box approach to sculpture creation. The small vivid women figures linked or bonded to their pedestals; the figures are delicate and intriguing representation of a woman’s mind and soul yearning for liberty, freedom, a moment of tranquility from busy daily life, or a space that she could spend the time totally with herself and for escaping from the routine and monotony.
The woman made of bronze is warm and sensual and dances in/on a structure of rusted iron. She observes the world from her/ours solitude, from this vertiginous watchtower (metaphor of life, universe) rusted because the inexorable time. The base rises impressively, creating a contradiction between both pieces. However, in Joan’s work the geometrical base and the figure find a surprising harmony..

This piece is unsigned. Irving Lehman (1900-1983) was an American Jewish painter, sculptor, engraver, and designer. Born in Kiev in then Russia, Lehman studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union and the National Academy of Art and spent much of his working life in New York City. Part of the Abstract Expressionist school, he worked in oil and watercolor as a painter and in metal and steel as a sculptor; his works have been shown in galleries in England, France, Italy, Israel and Japan, and were included in an international traveling exhibition in Europe in 1951. Like many other artists of his generation, he painted for the WPA and then adopted a more abstract style after WWII.
Lehman spent much of his career in NYC. He had his first exhibition at ACA Gallery in 1934. He also exhibited at the Whitney, National Academy, PAFA, Brooklyn Museum, Chicago Art Institute, and others.
This work contains Constructivist elements anticipating the more gestural abstraction of the post-WWII New York Abstract Expressionist School.
