Abstract Art

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

He attended art classes in his youth and in 1918 moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian, which he left after six months. During this time, Dubuffet met Raoul Dufy, Max Jacob, Fernand Léger, and Suzanne Valadon and became fascinated with Hans Prinzhorn's book on psychopathic art. He traveled to Italy in 1923 and South America in 1924. Then Dubuffet gave up painting for about ten years, working as an industrial draftsman and later in the family wine business. He committed himself to becoming an artist in 1942. Blaze, 72"x60" Contemporary Abstract Painting
Located in New York, NY
72"x60" signed on reverse by the artist. This is a contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Vibrant red, violet and pink fields of color are contrasted by sky blue and golden yellow in this gestural abstract painting. An impressive statement piece by the artist. Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...

Gestural Abstract Large Scale Painting, Vibrant Contemporary "Sapphire Bridge"
Located in New York, NY
48"x72" signed on reverse by the artist. This is a contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Bright, nearly neon orange and pink fields of color are contrasted by an electric blue large path brushstroke. The composition and color are reminiscent of the coral, magenta and rose sunset against a blue body of water. Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. Teodora Guererra’s abstract artistic vision has evolved throughout her years spent painting and teaching in Fairfield County, Connecticut; Tucson, Arizona, and upstate New York. Arizona’s naturally radiant landscape and arid climate led her to experiment with rich under-painting and vivid color; while the shifting seasons of the East Coast inspired Guererra to pursue dripping and staining techniques. Her focus has always been pushing the limits through experimentation with new materials. “As an artist, painting can be tormenting and sublime at the same time. I'm a big risk taker, experimenting with different materials to layer, stain and saturate color on large canvases. My most successful work achieves a sense of fluid movement with saturated color, that is complex yet minimalistic. The end result should be a painting that dances across the canvas and quiets all the noise.” Guererra received her undergraduate and graduate Art degrees from Southern Connecticut University, The College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College. Guererra’s paintings can be found in public and private collections across the U.S., including the Allmen Health and Wellness Center for Women in New York and SUNY Brockport, NY, William & Sonoma, San Francisco, CA. Her influences are Pat Steir, John McCracken, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Jud, Bernar Venet, Agnes Martin and Brian Rutenberg. ARTIST STATEMENT “Sometimes the few people I see ask, where have you been, and I smile and say I’ve been traveling, because I’ve been in my studio for way too long. I’m a bit of a recluse so you will probably never meet or see me. My paintings are how I see the world. I’m a big risk taker, so the work can be a series of continuous failures until I can work it out. It may start with a memory, like my feet in the warm sand at the shore which becomes the essence at the start. Then as I move my brush in gestural sweeps across the canvas and the painting starts to take shape. I will add and scrap away layers and through this process I will find the final composition, and then, when everything comes together, it’s heaven.” EDUCATION Southern Connecticut State University, BS, Art College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College, MS, Art EXHIBITIONS 2008 Masters Show, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY 2009 Saratoga Color, Sorelle Gallery Fine Art, Saratoga Springs, NY 2011 Connections, Sorelle Gallery Fine Art, Albany, NY 2012 Chromacosmo, Sorelle Gallery Fine Art, Albany, NY 2012 Reveal Fall, Sorelle Gallery Fine Art, Albany, NY 2012 Albany Wine & Dine For The Arts, Albany, NY 2012 Albany Center Gallery Masquerade Gala, Albany, NY 2013 Chromacosmo Returns, Sorelle Gallery Fine Art, Albany, NY 2013 Spectrum, Carriage Barn Art...

"Untitled" Pink Diptych Acrylic and Collage on Canvas
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Trevor Norris was born into a large family living in a small but brightly painted english row house. Life inside was turbulent and colorful. Norris's art is a personal reflection using his written stories as a catalyst to spark each work. The text holds the meaning and yet he covers it with many layers of bright paint making it illegible to the viewer. as each work develops it becomes more about the paint and less about the words. Trevor Norris tells his story, through layers of shapes and paint, reworking his literary narrative, finding order in disorder, and meaning in what is not said. "Untitled" Pink Diptych...

Armando 18.09.1929 Amsterdam Landschaft Giclee on heavy, hand-made cotton paper Year: 2018 Hand-signed and numbered Edition: 25 Condition: In good condition Dimensions: 48.0 x 47.7 on 61.0 x 58.7 cm ARMANDO (Amsterdam 1929 - Potsdam 2018) Sculptor, Writer, Film and documentary maker, Violinist Education: Armando studied art history in Amsterdam for a number of years. He lived in Amstelveen and worked in Amsterdam. Armando (Amsterdam 1929) is one of the most important post-war Dutch artists and he is appreciated nationally and internationally. His work, based on his personal experience of the Second World War in Amersfoort, deals with existential and universal themes that he describes in terms of power and powerlessness, perpetrators and victims, memory, transience and melancholy. Fascination for violence and evil determines his work from the outset. Amazed by the treacherous beauty of this violence, Armando uniquely elaborates his theme in every discipline that he practices. Driven by the desire for insight into evil and for the mastery of the techniques to shape his theme, he explores the possibilities of every medium to the extreme. Armando's work comprises series of monumental paintings, pasty and worked through in black and white with here and there traces of color, subtle, poetic drawings and graphics. From 1989 onwards sculptures appear that seem to be shaped and bent by forces of nature. Armando's prose and poetry have their own place. In a very specific language, the unspeakable, surrounded by a lot of white, is expressed. Documentaries in which both perpetrators and victims have the floor, films, theater and theater performances complete an oeuvre of which both visual and literary work have been awarded several times. As a violinist of the Armando Quartet, Armando expresses the feeling of melancholy and melancholy that has a place in all his work, in music.
