Mahogany
is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species.
Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as burr walnut and coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view.
Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect.
Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘flame’ mahogany and ‘fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments).
Cuban mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct.

Bulgari
The founder of the Bulgari brand is Sotirios Voulgaris who was born in March 1857 and came from the Epirus Village of Paramythia, the largest Aromanian center of silversmithing in the Balkans. He was one of eleven children of his father Georgios Voulgaris (1823–1889) and his Aromanian mother Eleni Stronggaris. In 1881, Sotirios Bulgari moved to Rome and, in 1884, opened his first store on via Sistina 85. In 1888, he married Aromanian Eleni Basio with whom he had six children: Constantine-Georgios (1889–1973), Leonidas-Georgios (1890–1966), Maria-Athena (1891–1976), Sofia (1893–1908), Alexandra (1895–1984) and Spyridon (1897–1932); Leonidas-Georgios is the father of the current chairman of the company, Paolo Bulgari.[9] In 1905, he unveiled the Via Condotti shop that would become the company's flagship.[10] In its early years, Bulgari was known for silver pieces that borrowed elements from Byzantine and Islamic art, combining them with floral motifs. At the time, Paris was the apex of fashion and creativity, and its trends influenced Sotirio's designs for decades: jewels of the early 20s were characterised by platinum Art Deco settings while those of the 30s featured geometric diamond motifs—sometimes set in combination with coloured gemstones. Convertible jewels...

Edwards & Roberts
was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By the 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century.
They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp.
Edwards & Roberts specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
Marquetry is decorative artistry where pieces of material (such as wood, pewter, or brass silver) of different colours are inserted into surface wood veneer to form intricate patterns such as scrolls or flowers.
The technique of veneered marquetry had its inspiration in 16th century Florence. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. This work, called opere di commessi, has medieval parallels in Central Italian "Cosmati"-work of inlaid marble floors, altars and columns. The technique is known in English as pietra dura, for the "hardstones" used: onyx, jasper, cornelian, lapis lazuli and colored marbles. In Florence, the Chapel of the Medici at San Lorenzo is completely covered in a colored marble facing using this demanding jig-sawn technique.
Techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp and other Flemish centers of luxury cabinet-making during the early 16th century. The craft was imported full-blown to France after the mid-seventeenth century, to create furniture of unprecedented luxury being made at the royal manufactory of the Gobelins, charged with providing furnishings to decorate Versailles and the other royal residences of Louis XIV. Early masters of French marquetry were the Fleming Pierre Golle and his son-in-law, André-Charles Boulle, who founded a dynasty of royal and Parisian cabinet-makers (ébénistes) and gave his name to a technique of marquetry employing brass with pewter in arabesque or intricately foliate designs.
Etagère is a piece of light furniture which was extensively made in France during the latter part of the 18th century. It consists of a series of stages or shelves for the reception of ornaments or other small articles. Like the what-not it was very often cornerwise in shape, and the best Louis XVI examples in exotic woods are exceedingly graceful and elegant.
In modern usage, an étagère is often used to refer specifically to a long-legged shelf unit that fits over a bathroom toilet...

A Calm with a Man of War firing a Salute
Oil on canvas
Canvas Size 14 1/4 x 17 1/4 in

Peter Monamy was an acclaimed British marine painter of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, renowned for his evocative depictions of seascapes and naval scenes. Born in 1681 on Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, Monamy displayed an early affinity for art, which was shaped by the maritime culture of his homeland. His works vividly capture the drama and grandeur of the sea, marking him as one of the prominent marine artists of his time.
At a young age, Monamy moved to London, where he likely apprenticed with a sign painter. His artistic skills flourished during this period, influenced by Dutch marine painters such as Willem van de Velde the Younger...

Georgian Spode Porcelain Coffee Can Bat Printed Game Birds Pattern, circa 1810
By Spode
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very good example of an English George III period, porcelain, coffee can, made by Spode, England in the early 19th century, circa 1810.
The can is nominally straight sided and has the Spode loop handle with a pronounced kick or kink to the lower part, with a lower attachment that curves out slightly from the cup. Spode is the only factory with a handle of this exact shape.
The can is decorated with one of their grey "bat printed" designs, showing game birds collected after the shoot. It also has hand painted gilded detail to both rims and the handle.

19th C Oak Stool with Leather Strap Top all handmade, Arts & Crafts period
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good handmade stool with a well turned solid oak frame and a woven leather strap top, all dating to the Arts & Crafts period of the late 19th century.
The stool is made of solid oak. The frame joints into four legs with ring turned detail and with four jointed rectangular cross stretchers between the legs, making this a very strong construction. The seat top is made of interwoven reddish-brown leather straps which sit on fabric webbing below the leather and give additional support to the seat. The seat is finished off with four narrow leather strips that run along the lower seat edge, one on each side, that are secured by brass nail studs.
The stool has developed a good patina from age and use and the reddish-brown leather has a deep natural mature shine, only achieved by repeated polishing and use over the years.
This piece is made in the 17th century Jacobean style but we date the stool to the late 19th century, made in the English Arts & Crafts period of the late 19th century.
Please note the images are taken both indoors and outdoors in different light conditions.
Notes on English leather topped seating
Leather covers on English seating dates back to the middle ages and the 16th century. Mature leather seats can be as tough and polished as the wood of the frame itself. During the reign of Elizabeth 1st...
