John Frederick Herring Sr. was born on September 12, 1795, in London, England. He was the son of a London-based fringe maker, and the family lived in modest circumstances. An appealing pair of still life paintings by Oliver Clare. The first painting shows primroses and lilac blossom next to a red berry. In the second, damsons can be seen next to apples and a strawberry.
Oliver Clare was born in Birmingham in 1853, the son of the flower artist George Clare (1839-1890) and his wife Elizabeth Bowen. His brother Vincent Clare (1856-1917) also became an artist and both would have received tuition from their father who influenced their style and subject matter. At the age of 18 he enlisted as a soldier in the Kings Own regiment, but gave this up to become a full time artist. Like his father, Clare specialised in still life paintings, containing fruit and garden flowers, often on mossy banks.

An atmospheric painting of ships in the Pool of London at dusk by Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher. A variety of boats are depicted in the scene, including tug boats and barges. In the distance lies the iconic Tower Bridge. The Pool of London is a stretch of the River Thames between Tower Bridge and Limehouse and is divided into two sections, the Upper Pool and the Lower Pool.
Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher was a marine artist who was born in Marylebone, London on 23 July 1857 to Robert Henry Fletcher and Julia Pennell. His father worked for the Bengal Pilot Service guiding shipping along the Hooghly River between Calcutta and the Bay of Bengal. After the death of his father in 1862, his mother married the picture dealer Reuben Brooks. He attended the Bradmore House School in Chiswick Lane before enrolling at the Chelsea School of Art, where he became a close friend of the landscape artist Daniel Sherrin.
Fletcher initially enlisted in the Army Hospital Corp, serving in Nova Scotia but was invalided out in 1882 at the age of 24 due to an eye condition. His records indicate he was 6ft tall with fair hair and grey eyes. He continued to paint in his spare time and undoubtedly his travels would have inspired his subject matter and given him a deeper knowledge of shipping and the sea. He married Annie Reed Moses in 1886 at Norwich and they lived in Margate before moving back to London to live in Blackheath around 1890. He is widely believed to have set up an auction business during this time to help support his growing family, however , perhaps due to the return of ill health he decided to give it up to focus on painting.
Although he did not exhibit, he sold his work mainly through art galleries, possibly aided by his step father. He also used the pseudonym of John Hayes which was probably for contractual reasons. By 1901, he had established himself as a full time artist and was living at Georgette Place in Greenwich with his wife and their 5 children. He later moved to 99 Lee Road, Blackheath where he spent the rest of his life. He died at Blackheath on 23 June, 1945.

A lovely painting of the town of Semur-en-Auxois, France by Letitia Marion Hamilton. The work with its airy lightness shows figures outside a grocers shop next to the Guillier Gate showing a glimpse of the central square of the famous medieval town. The use of white pigment in her colours applied in a thick impasto was a trademark of her work.
Letitia Marion Hamilton was born in Dunboyne, County Meath on 30 July, 1878, the daughter of Charles Hamilton and Louisa Brooke. She came from a family of famous Irish women artists: her great-grandmother was Caroline Hamilton (1771-1861), her elder sister Eva Hamilton (1876-1960) was also a talented painter, and her cousin Rose Maynard Barton (1856-1929) was a townscape and watercolour artist. The family lived at Hamwood, Dunboyne, Meath in Ireland.
She trained at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin alongside her sister Eva under Sir William Orpen (1878-1939) before attending the Slade School of Art where she was taught by Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956). She made her debut at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1909 where she continued to exhibit regularly. In 1912, she was awarded a silver medal by the Dublin school and received another from the Board of Education National Competition.
After the death of her father in 1913, she and her family moved to 40 Lower Dominick Street in Dublin, later living at Monasterevin, in Co. Kildare. By 1920, they had relocated to Font Hill in Palmerstown, Dublin. In the same year, Hamilton formed the Society of Dublin Painters together with Paul Henry, his wife Emily Grace Mitchell...

John Frederick Herring was born in Doncaster c1820 to the artist John Frederick Herring (1795-1865) and his wife Anna Catharina (nee Harris) and was baptised on 2 May, 1821. There is some confusion about the date of his birth due to an earlier birth record existing for 21 June, 1815. To complicate matters further, all of the census records indicate he was born in 1816. Some sources suggest this was an earlier child who died and that Herring was the child born in 1820.
Herring’s brothers Charles Herring (1828-1856) and Benjamin Herring (1830-1871) also became artists. He and his brothers were exposed to art at an early age and were all tutored by their father whose subject matter influenced their work. The family moved to Newmarket during the early 1830’s and Herring would visit the racecourse to study the horses. The brothers would often collaborate with their father on paintings, however, Herring Jnr soon developed his own style and began painting farmyard and rustic scenes featuring horses and other farm animals. His emerging success caused some discord with his father, who from around 1836 began adding ‘SR’ or ‘Senr’ to his signature to avoid confusion between the two artists. Herring did not join his father when he later moved to London but at some point moved to Cambridgeshire where he met and married Emma Jane Dawson on 29 August, 1836. Together, they lived at Great Wilbraham with their 5 children.
By 1861, he had moved to nearby Fulbourn and continuing his successful career made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863. He began exhibiting at the British Institution from 1864 and also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street.
After the death of his first wife, Herring married the artist Catherine Augusta Rolfe on 5 December 1865 at St Pauls Church, Hammersmith in London. Catherine (or Kate) was the sister of the artists Alexander Frederick Rolfe (1814-1875) and Henry Leonides Rolfe (1823-1881) and the daughter of William E Rolfe, a friend of his father. They lived at Wilbraham Road in Fulbourn, later moving to The Poplars in Fulbourn where Herring spent the rest of his life. He died at Fulbourn on 6 March 1907.
Examples of his work are held by a number of museums and public collections including the Bradford Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery, Government Art Collection, Grundy Art Gallery, the Tate, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC and the Watford Museum & Witt Library.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

English 17th century portrait of a lady

A 17th century English portrait of a lady by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), half-length in a painted feigned oval, wearing a green silk gown with chestnut coloured cloak over one shoulder, her fair hair curled in the fashionable ringlet style of the period. Oil on canvas in an English giltwood 'Lely' frame.
We are grateful to Diana Dethloff and Catharine MacLeod (who are currently working on a Lely catalogue raisonné) for their confirmation of Lely as the artist from photograph analysis of this previously unidentified early work.

The sitter is likely to have been from an upper class or aristocratic family in court circles, who were the main source of Lely`s patronage. The simple composition serves to highlight the beauty of the sitter through portraying her pale decolletage and complexion, set against the gentle gaze of her blue eyes, the soft blush of her cheeks and her full red lips.
Peter Lely (1618-1680) was originally of dutch origin and became Principle Painter to the King in 1661, following in the footsteps of Van Dyck who had died in 1641. He dominated the portrait painting scene in England for over 20 years, creating a distinctive 'court look' in his work which had a strong influence on many other artists. He had an extremely successful and popular portrait practice which meant that he soon had to develop production methods that could accommodate the high demand for portraits, and also for copies and versions of them which were given as gifts to family and courtiers. The use of studio assistants was a common practice for busy artists and as with Van Dyck, Lely is known to have used specialist assistants to execute particular parts of his paintings. A wonderful historical painting by Laslett John Pott of figures at a table in the High Great Chamber at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire. Two men in Elizabethan costume can be seen standing up to toast a lady as she reclines in a chair holding a fan, whilst a dog watches on. Meanwhile, another woman looks across the table as her seated companion has his glass refilled by a man servant. To the left of the painting, a lute with sheets of music can be seen lying on the ground whilst on the opposite side sits a wine cistern with a bottle next to it.
The fashionable dress and bearing of the woman seated on the right indicate a woman of wealth and standing, most likely Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury who built Hardwick Hall in 1590. She was lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth I and one of the wealthiest women in England. She commissioned the architect Robert Smythson to design the house, which included the extraordinary High Great Chamber located on the second floor. Decorated with a plaster frieze depicting Diana the huntress, a large alabaster and marble chimney piece and Brussels tapestries on the lower walls, it was used by the countess to greet and entertain guests. After her death, the property passed to her son William Cavendish 1st Earl of Devonshire in 1608 and later to his great grandson, William who was made the 1st Duke of Devonshire in 1694. In 1959, the property was transferred to the National Trust and most of its original features, including the plaster friezes, chimney piece and tapestries depicted in this painting, can still be seen today. The painting bears an old label for Frost & Reed, no. 30819, with the title ‘Interior of Haddon Hall’ which was wrongly given to the painting at the time. Later research uncovered the correct location as being Hardwick Hall. Pott used Hardwick Hall as the backdrop for a number of his works including: Mary Queen of Scots Being Led to her Execution, His Highness in Disgrace, Waiting for the King’s Favourite and Wayland Smith Showing Amy Robsart her Wedding Dress.
Laslett John Pott was a genre and historical painter born in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1837, the son of John Manger Pott, and his wife Sophia Charlotte Moss. His father was a successful auctioneer and land valuer and his wealth enabled Pott to receive a good education. Although he showed an early talent for art, his father wanted him to become an architect and at the age of 16 he became an apprentice at a local firm. The sitter, seated in a yellow silk gown trimmed with a pink bow playing the cello, is believed to be the artist Balthazar Denner's eldest daughter Catharina (1715-1744), after his marriage to Esther Winter in Hamburg in 1712. She is also recognisable in another portrait of the Denner family in the Hamburg Kunsthalle, painted circa 1740 by the artist's son, Jacob Denner (1722-1765). Oil on canvas in a period giltwood frame.
Provenance: Private collection, Northern Germany
Professor Helmut Borsch-Supan, Berlin, confirmed the authenticity of the painting after examining it in 2013. The painting will also be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonnée of the artist, by Ute Mannhardt.
