A beautifully painted marine scene of a boat being launched from a Dutch shore by Pieter Cornelis Dommersen. In the foreground, fishermen can be seen heaving a boat into the water as others look on. Beyond the beach, a number of ships are shown moored next to a windmill whilst further ships are depicted sailing around the harbour.
Pieter Cornelis Dommersen was born Pieter Cornelis Dommershuizen or Dommerhershuisen on 6 December, 1833 in Utrecht, Holland. A delightful genre painting of a family playing a game of cards by James Hardy Jnr. A group of people are depicted sitting at a table in front of a fireplace in a rustic interior, playing cribbage. As four of the players study their cards, a woman gets up to help another player with their hand. Meanwhile, a tan and white dog watches on with interest.
The reverse of this painting includes a handwritten inscription which reads: ‘This painting was purchased by the late Mr Taylor for £40 and bought by me at Public Auction at Addison Hall for £45. March 1907. F. C. Mander’. Further research has discovered that a public auction of the collection of a Mr J Taylor Esq was held by his Executors on Tuesday 5 March 1907 at Addison Hall, Addison Road, Kensington. Details of the sale including a mention of a work on offer by J Hardy, appeared in the Kensington News and West London Times on Friday 1 March 1907. Messrs F C Mander & Co were listed as the auctioneers involved in the sale. Their address at the time was 296, Uxbridge Road, Shepherd’s Bush.
James Hardy Jnr was a genre and sporting painter born in Brighton, Sussex in 1832 into a family of artists. He was the son of the portrait and genre painter James Hardy (1801-1879) and his wife Elizabeth (née Vinson). This angling scene by Thomas Baker depicts two figures fishing on the river Usk in Wales. The distinctively shaped bedrock shown in the painting appears very similar to that found at Llangynidr, which is located about 10 miles outside Brecon.

A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles.
Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879.
During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co.
He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum.
Presentation: The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, these works are offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

A wonderful pair of seascape paintings by Pieter Cornelis Dommersen. The first painting depicts the Goeser Veerhuis or Goes Ferry House on the left with the Dutch town of Goes in the distance. The ferry house was a popular landing stage for barges and fishing boats. Goes church, with its distinctive spire can be seen in the far distance. The second painting is of Elburg, a fishing port on the east shore of the Zuiderzee in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Dommersen often returned to these areas to paint when he travelled back to the Netherlands and these fine examples were most likely painted on one of these trips.

A lovely landscape painting of a plough team on a country track near Bredon’s Norton by David Bates. Bredon’s Norton is a village located in the Cotswolds, on the slopes of Bredon Hill in South Worcestershire. The America women’s rights activist Victoria Woodhull Martin moved to the village in 1901 and by 1908 had set up an agricultural school for women at her Norton’s Park estate. The Antarctic explore Raymond Priestley also lived there. Although Bates was living in Surrey at the time of this painting, he would have been familiar with the area after having lived and worked in Worcestershire for some considerable time. He would have also most likely been aware of Victoria Woodhull Martin and the school.
David Bates was born in March, Cambridge in 1840 to Benjamin Bates a shoe maker and Sarah Bates. By 1851, the family had moved to Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire and from 1855 Bates became an apprentice at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works in Worcester. There he developed his artistic talent, painting flower decorations onto vases and plates. At some point after 1861, he became a full time artist and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863, continuing to exhibit there until 1893. He also exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery.
He married Elizabeth Higgs from Worcester in 1867 and they lived at Cherry Orchard, Bath Road in Worcester where their children were later born. Their second child John Bates Noel (1870-1927) became a landscape artist and their younger son David Samuel...
