Pair of Walnut Armchairs, Late 16th Century, French Renaissance, with Ram Mask C
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
"This rare pair of upholstered open armchairs relate to examples in museum collections in France, the USA and the UK. Few pieces of Renaissance furniture featuring ram’s head motif arm terminals survive as the chairs would have been in the ownership of the elite symbolising leadership and authority. The condition of these armchairs reflects their age and use and they have a rich colour and lustrous patina. The form of these chairs is characteristic of a stereotypical Renaissance model. The upholstered section of the backs are upholstered in wool with applied 17th century floral needlework faced with gilded studs and supported by square section uprights. The channelled tablet and stylised rosette incised curved arms terminate in acanthus capped carved rams' masks and are supported by column turned uprights headed by an entrelac collar. The ram is a symbol of leadership and authority and it also determination, action, initiative, and Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac. The seats are upholstered in wool with applied 17th century needlework faced with gilded studs and supported by tapering column/ring turned front legs and square section back legs. Some of the stretchers with moulded detailing. Standing on front ball feet. Exceptional original colour and patina. Henri II 1550-60. Condition: The chairs are both sturdy with exceptional colour and patina. One armchair with a splice on the rhs back leg and replaced but period front and lhs stretcher both bearing old nail marks, two other replaced stretchers and the back uprights bearing old nail marks indicating that they were upholstered at some point. The other armchair with an old repair to a break in the right back leg and an old patch near the end of the leg, replaced but period back and lhs stretcher, small patch to bottom of lhs arm where it meets the support. Old worm marks and some losses. Considering the age of the armchairs, these repairs and replacements are not unusual and consistent with the repairs on the related armchairs in museum collections. They suggest that the chairs either fell backwards at some point or someone leant back while sitting in them. Back Height 107cm, 42in, Seat Height 59.5cm, 23½in Width 60cm, 23½ in, Seat 59cm, 23¼in Depth including arm 59cm, 23¼in, Seat 49cm, 19¼in Provenance: Deaccessioned by The National Galleries of Scotland Bearing an old transport label from Alain Moatti (French architect) to Mrs Katz, London Literature: Related to : There are comparable armchairs in international museum collections dated to the second half of the 16th century. Most share the following characteristics with the above pair, the form, the ram's mask carved to the end of each arm, the curvilinear outline of the arm rests, the ring turned front legs as well as the plain square section back legs and plain stretchers. 1. Two stained glass windows...

Martin Eisler & Carlo Hauner Pair of Purple Velvet Armchairs with Ottomans
By Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler
Located in Barcelona, ES
Martin Eisler (1913-1977) & Carlo Hauner (1927-1997) Set of armchair and footrest Manufactured by Forma Moveis,  Brazil, 1950 Iron structure, fabric upholstery Pair of purple velvet Mid-century modern velvet armchairs made in Brazil. Measurements: 100 cm x 60 cm x 70 H cm (armchair) 39.37 in x 23.62 in x 27.56 H in (armchair) Literature Brasilian modern: The rediscovery of 20th century Brazilian furniture. Aric Chen. Brasil, 2016. Pag 217,128 (similar model). Martin Eisler (Vienna, Austria, 1913 - São Paulo, Brazil, 1977), was an architect and furniture designer. He was part of a group of European architects and designers who left Europe during the chaos of the Second World War and went to live and work in Brazil. Eisler stood out amongst this group of creatives, his work was at the forefront of modern furniture design in Brazil which flourished through the 50s and 60s in the region. The work of Martin Eisler in partnership with Carlo Hauner (1927-1996) was of particular significance. Eisler left Europe in 1938 due to the rise of fascist regimes. He first lived in Argentina, where he was settled and worked as an architect, set designer and interior designer, he opened up an interior design firm Interieur Forma. In 1940, he married Rosl Wolf, the daughter of German immigrants. Born in Brescia in 1927, Carlo Hauner studied technical drawing and drawing at the Brera Academy in Milan, Italy. In 1948 he successfully participated in the Venice Biennale after which he moved to Brazil, where he dedicated himself to the design of textile, ceramics, furniture and architecture. In only a very short time he founded a furniture production company and purchased a factory from Lina Bo Bardi and her husband Pietro Bardi, renaming it Móveis Artesanal. In 1953 Hauner met Martin Eisler, who was looking for help to produce furniture for the home of his brother-in-law, Ernesto Wolf. Eisler reached out to Hauner and the rest is history. The two men connected and with Wolf’s financial backing, they opened Galeria Artesanal (a store for their company Móveis Artesenal) on a busy street in São Paulo. Being highly ambitious and with an eye on the international market as well as the upcoming office market, Móvies Artesanal later changed into Forma. Along with Oca, Forma became one of the biggest names in Brazilian furniture production. Even managing to attract an exclusive license to sell Knoll furniture, bringing big names in international design such as Mies Van Der Rohe, Charles Eames and Harry Bertoia to the Brazilian furniture market. Hauner and Eisler’s designs are characterized by the use of Brazilian woods, thin tubular frames and a range from furniture, to ceramics and textiles. Some of their most famous designs are the “rib” lounge chair...

Oliver Sundqvist and Frederik Nystrup Larsen Contemporary Colorful Chair, 2021
By Oliver Sundqvist and Frederik Nystrup Larsen
Located in Barcelona, ES
Chair model "Private Parking" From the "Kiki Beach Club" series Contemporary Design Manufactured by Oliver Sundqvist and Frederik Nystrup Larsen Copenhagen (Denmark), 2021 Fiber glass, acrylic, lacquer Measurements: 70 cm x 45 cm x 71 H cm 27.55 in × 17.71 in × 27.95 H in Edition Unique piece The creative duo of Frederik Nystrup-Larsen (b.1992 Copenhagen) and Oliver Sundqvist (b.1991 Copenhagen) has proven to be a partnership that continuously questions the current state of contemporary art. Working on the boundary of art and design, the pair have reinterpreted the processes of consumerism, illustrating critique on overconsumption and poor manufacturing. Intellectually and physically dependent on regular variation and change'Mater’, (meaning mother in Latin), the first collective project between Oliver and Frederik, was a vase originally created as a Christmas present for their mother. The vase was used for the interiors of Norma, a Copenhagen restaurant that is often referred to as the best restaurant in the world. Since ‘Mater’, the duo have continued focusing on creating unique and collectible objects, with a central focus on longevity. The pair seek to ignite a feeling of responsibility in people, through the creations of thoughtful and sustainable pieces. A lot of their work questions the surrounding world, inspired by characters who challenge established understandings of and structures within this world, the duo look towards multiple disciplines to fuel their creativity. Equally as original as their final products, is their method. Triggered by beauty and decay, their creative process is split into phases, - initially, they spend a lot of time reflecting, not stressing about it. Being slow, taking actions that do not related to the project or practice. The following phase; the physical execution of the idea, is built on intuition and (often an unhealthy) tempo. Stress is welcome as we work like machines, brains left aside. The designers split their time between Copenhagen and London and have exhibited at Art Basel, as well as at two solo shows before they had even finished school. The pair are currently working as NIKO JUNE...
